Alside windows

Posted At: 2004-09-30 15:02:44

Reading the forums you see remarks that Alside is a good company with a quality product and very good warranty. Then you see remarks that there have been quality issues with the Excalibur although they might have been taken care of by now. UltraMax is not a good design according to some people, it seems that the window to consider with Alside would be the Sheffield and then you hear about bad air test results with those.

I appreciate all the honest remarks from those with experience and knowledge to help people make an informed decision. I am not complaining about that. Am I wrong in thinking that it is better to look elsewhere for my windows.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but I looked at the Excalibur and ultimately went with the Gorell 5300 series. The price was about $900 difference for 11 windows, but I felt the Gorell was a significantly better product. My windows haven't been installed yet, so I can't really say yet how they're working out. My neighbors bought the Excalibur, and they love them. I think the Gorell windows will end up looking a little nicer. The Excalibur doesn't have much style overall, in my opinion.

When we pros discuss windows on this site, we do over-analize sometimes. It's the window-geek in us.

Even though the Sheffield does not have the air infiltration ratings of let's say a Schuco, it is still a very good window and I would have no problem recommending it on a general basis. The air infiltration ratings are not that bad.
Alside has good windows within the line such as Preservation and Sheffield, but don't let that sway you into thinking all their windows are good. It's that way with many brands. I'll recommend a brand sometimes without even thinking about that brand's cheaper windows. Most of us are giving brand recommendations on only the top window in a company's line, so that should always be a consideration when taking our advice. We are not usually giving blanket recommendations for a company's entire line.

I am waiting to hear from Gorell, I called Monday and talked to a live person who put me on someones voicemail and I have never heard back from them unless they called at some point when I was not next to the phone, but that would have been a very very small window of time that they would have missed me.

I emailed them the day before yesterday and got an automated email back yesterday saying they would get back to me with information. I have heard nothing as of today and am frustrated because I was hoping to get a look at them and make a decision by the end of the week. I guess this is a busy time for windows now and I didn!t want to have to wait until November or December to get them installed.

I have also emailed Winstrom and hoping to hear from them.

Great Lakes called me back the next day and said their polygem window blows away everything else on the market in that range. I will have an estimate for them but I have to believe that if they were that good I would have seen reference to them on this forum by some of the pros.

I am hoping there is someone in this area that sells and installs the Gorell windows.

windowshopper:

I have no idea if the Great Lakes windows "blow away everything else on the market in that range." I do know, however, that you said you haven't seen reference to them on this forum.

I simply wanted to let you know that I have seen some mention on this forum of Great Lakes windows, and if I recall, the remarks were fairly positive. Anyway, I know nothing about Great Lakes windows. I just wanted to let you know I have seen them mentioned several times. You might try using the search function on this board to find previous posts on Great Lakes windows.

The Polygem is a nice window. I've installed a couple thousand of them, and did a courthouse and county hospital with them in the U.P. of Michigan a few years back as well as the Catholic diosese offices in Superior, Wisconsin.
He may indeed blow away the competition he usually runs into, but he wouldn't blow away a Schuco, a Preservation, or a few others, I will guarantee you.
That said, it is still a nice window. Also, I see nothing wrong with the Polygem guy being excited and "sold" on the window he sells. I commend him for being passionate about his craft.
Good luck on your search!
