I just want to give an update on this for those that might be searching the board in the future-- It turns out that the newer Harvey casement mechanism has been completely reengineered. Instead of two screws going horizontally into the window, the bottom flange of the crank casing extends out and fo...

Interestingly, most installers seem reluctant to break down the cost between materials and labor. I would have thought this would be a fundamental precept of an above-board quote, but maybe this is not standard in the window installation industry. I get the feeling that suppliers also charge differe...

Thanks again everyone.

Pellaman7--OK, I'll avoid the manufactured window J-channel.

Mass. Window Guy--Thanks for the info. I learn something every day. Yes, the Quest3 Redwood is a darker shade. Pictures would be great. A picture is worth a thousand words.

What brand of Fiberglass Windows

Shocker, What brand of wood/fiberglass windows were you looking at. My wife saw Marvin Infinity/Integrity casements today and liked them. We've gotten quotes for Harvey and Alside vinyls and we've got everything in price from "You've got to be kidding!!!" to "That's not too bad."...

What's a Brake?

Sorry, Mass. Window Guy, but I didn't understand your comment. My ignorance is showing. I don't understand what a "brake" is and why it's not applicable to Quest3. We haven't signed anything yet, it's just that what we've seen so far, the Quest3 seems like a nice product and it comes in ou...

Thanks--Any other advantages/disadvantages

Thanks pellaman7, That makes sense. We're planning on using Quest3 4" clapboard--some of it diagonal instead of horizontal. It makes sense what you're saying--the windows have to have some kind of receptor, whether built into the window or attached to an external casing (presumably this is the ...

Advantages/Disadvantages of Different External Casings

We've been presented with different options for external casings. We're replacing our existing casement windows that have 908 casings (why is it called this anyway). It appears that most of the existing cases are not rotted, even though they look bad. We're also planning on replacing the existing si...

Pella, Andersen, Thermal Industires, Sunrise, and Harvey

I had a a couple contractors out that install Harvey windows and based on the feedback I got here from Mass. window guy (http://www.replacement-windows.com/windowbb/viewtopic.php?t=962) I am considering whether Harvey is the way to go. Also, a friend indicated he had trouble with the hardware on the...

I know squat about windows, but this guy is blowing Argon up your you-know-what. As FenEx has pointed out Argon is heavier than air which is mostly Nitrogen and Oxygen and being heavier the molecule/atom is also larger, not smaller than air. Check out this perdiodic table: http://wine1.sb.fsu.edu/ch...

More Info on Problems with Harvey Casement Windows

Just talked to a friend at work who just happens to have Harvery casements at a 6-year old new construction. He tells me that he has continuous problems with the crank mechanisms. This is how he describes it: The crank mechanism is attached by two screws and it there is a lot of movement up and down...

More info and Dimensions

Window Guy, Thanks for the info on Harvey and Thermal Industries. We don't know that much about windows--so many brands :-(. We're definitely in the market for low maintenance, so vinyl is probably what we'd choose. We see the Thermal Industires contractor tomorrow. I believe he was talking about th...

Confused by Contractors in New Hampshire

Hello, everyone. We're interested in getting replacement windows for our home and are quite confused by the two approaches being advocated by the two contractors that we've had out to look at our home. Here's the situation: We live in southern NH. Our home is a largish contemporary built in 1985--po...
