Re: Which is better, single doors or French doors?
I don't fully understand the question. It appears you might be asking: 1. What is better for airflow: single doors or French (double) doors? 2. What is better for function/aesthetics: single doors or French (double) doors? 3. What is better for airflow: double hungs or single doors or French (double...

Re: Help needed with leaking replacement windows.
Water will always get behind whatever siding you use, be it wood, vinyl, stucco, even brick. The intent is for the water to run down the sheathing's exterior (or the air gap between the sheathing and siding material) and weep out harmlessly at the bottom. If you don't have functioning flashing again...

Re: Sash windows - what is this thing?
Wow, I don't think I've ever seen one of those on a window! I used to sell those back in the 70s, and even then it was rare. If you google "how to fix a sagging screen door" you'll likely see a bunch of links. Wood screen doors typically don't have much strength and can be more prone to sa...

Re: Low-E Glass failure and "scratches"
Those gold colored spots look consistent with a softcoat Low E layer that has been applied to the wrong side (side 1 or 4) of the glass, or a softcoat Low E that is correctly located between-glass (side 2 or 3) but has experience seal failure. I'm not sure WHAT is going on with all of the scratches ...

Re: Pella Inserts vs. Marvin Ultimate Inserts
I just HAD to look into this since I enjoy a good challenge. And I rarely get on this forum these days. Over the years I've sometimes been motivated to clarify confusion about Andersen, Pella, Marvin, various vinyls, and even plain exterior storm windows! Here's what I came up with on Pella's. First...

Re: correct window measurement?
Three thoughts here. I'd say one inch gaps per side are acceptable but not ideal. Most installers these days would fill that in to about 1/2". However, an inch gap, with shims, isn't so bad as it can be filled in with foam insulation to aid with both thermal insulation and air infiltration. Bes...

Re: Corner Windows over Bathtub - thoughts on window type?
I'd like to suggest something brilliant or fancy but I actually think double hungs work best for that application. Like WoW mentioned, horizontal sliders are generally less airtight than other window types. Casements would work too, although I wonder if the style would match the rest of the home. Th...

Re: duralite vs intercept
Thermally, the all foam Super Spacer is superior. Structurally, it is not. In fact I would not use Super Spacer for that reason. Um, the original message, posted six years ago, didn't even ask about Super Spacer. However, since it has been brought up, and a claim was made that it is thermally super...

Re: Simonton - to reinforce or not
I realize I'm coming a bit late to the party - the previous posts were from last week - but I thought I'd revisit the issue with an additional thought or two. I visit semi-regularly but usually don't comment these days unless there is a point that hasn't already been expressed that's worth mentionin...

Re: Manufacturer for Slim Profile Vinyl Replacement Windows.
Two main thoughts come to mind. First, an issue regarding the mulling of units. You had mentioned the current window is a round top single hung. I'm wondering if you meant the current window is a single hung with a round top transom, or an actual one-unit single hung that has a round top. If you mea...

The link you provided points to a photo gallery of many, many different windows. Which photo are you referring to?

Re: Window Distortion Question
Three possibilities come to mind as to the distortion you've seen in windows. WoW mentioned one of them - Low-E coatings on the glass are reflective and that can account for some of the distortion you see. There are several types of Low-E coatings available, with one, two, or three layers all pretty...

Re: Window will not stay up. What is the Brand?
You can also look for the brand name on the window, which sometimes is located in one of several places. 1. On the glass - Sometimes the manufacturer's name is etched in the corner of the glass, either the full name or an abbreviation 2. On the sash lock or on the sash lift 3. On the spacer between ...

I'm coming a bit late to the party, seeing as I check in only occasionally these days, but since you mentioned you didn't have a picture to look at of a single hung bay with a two-wide single hung in the middle, here's one for you. :D https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-jx6N8kZ/0/S/i-jx6N8kZ-S.jpg F...

Re: which glass to choose
so if I end up being able and willing to go with inline triple pane, would I want to get the hard coat with a .19 u value and .44 shgc or soft coat with .17 u value and .28 shgc? I'd go with the .17 U-Value & the SHGC of .28. Here's why. If you have a large amount of glass in a certain room or ...
