They only listed 10 companies, out of hundreds that make windows. How did they select those 10 companies? The study doesn't say. Did the survey only list those 10 companies to rate because they are the biggest? Was it open-ended, where the respondents could list any company? It didn't say. Without k...

Here's the stuff I used on my house: http://www.gutterguard.com/GutterPages/Product.htm I installed the vinyl version of this. Some notes about this product: - it is possible for the occasional pine needle to fall in. However, I have found that if the quantity of needles is low, they will just wash ...

I used these 4' vinyl pieces with a curve and a slit in them so that the water goes in the slit and everything else slides off. Got them on the internet for about $5 a piece and installed them myself - slip them under the shingles and hook them onto the gutter. My whole house cost less then $150 to ...

I'm a homeowner who chose fiberglass (Marvin Infinity) over vinyl or aluminum-clad wood. Here's why: What I liked: 1) More glass. My windows are relatively small, I figure I gained around 15% or more glass per window over vinyl because of the narrower rails. This was a big issue for us. 2) We liked ...

JScott, Thanks for your analysis, I appreciate you taking the time. I really like the Infinity's, as I mentioned I put them in my house when I replaced my windows. I'm on to the next project now - I'm adding a windowed-in porch onto my house. My contractor spec'ed out Andersen 400 windows. These see...

JScott,

That's interesting, the Infinity web site doesn't make that clear at all.

How do Infinity's prices generally stack up against comparable Andersen 400's?

I put Marvin Infinity's in my house, there has been no odor what-so-ever, and I have been very happy with them so far.

They don't seem to have them for new construction though, and my contractor for the project I am working on is partial to Andersen 400's.

It's an Ansersen CW26, which is 4'8" wide by 6' tall, however it has two operating sashes, each half the size of the windows. So each side would be roughly 2' x 5'6".

Based on your 18 sq ft limitation, it seems this should be OK.

Large casement windows

What's the largest practical size for a casement window?

Andersen, for example, makes one that is 6' high and 5' wide, but I'm worried that each side is so heavy that the mechanism won't work right or will bend or break prematurely.

Thanks!

After buying the house, and learning about the problems with lead based paint, we have been very dissapointed to learn about the general complacency out there. Realtors, home inspectors, even the city tend to downplay the seriousness of the issue. There's complacency because in general the risks ar...

Re: Taite-Seal system

mostly because of lead concerns given we have a baby. In all reality the windows probably do have lead base paint on them, but more than likely have a few coats of latex or oil based paint over the top of the lead based paint, rendering them fairly safe. This is incorrect. Most lead from windows is...

For my bay window I just had the windows replaced - two angled double-hungs (31x48) and a picture window (75x48). The structure was fine and I didn't see any reason to go through the hassle and expense of completely tearing off the old bay and replacing it. As long as the frame is in good shape, I d...

One big difference is that the aluminum-clad is primarily an all-wood window with a thin covering of metal, whereas the Integrity is more like 50% wood/50% fiberglass that are bonded together. This link shows a good picture of this: http://www.integritywindows.com/products/index.cfm?page=Wood-Ultrex...

Schuco is so expensive in eastern MA because there is only one dealer/installer, and they choose to charge ridiculous prices. They seem to be up there with NewPro price-wise. :? If you search these boards for "NES" or "New England Sash" you will find some interesting reading. A f...
