Clarification - referring back to the two pictures above - all of the black arrows point to metal components - three of the four have been painted white over the steel. Thx!

Thanks, that sounds like really good news!! Follow-up question: I can see where the unpainted steel track that is tacked down will pop out. But it seems that a lot of the surrounding structure (e.g., the jamb) is also steel. My impression is that the guy we're thinking of buying from intends to remo...

Hello again - I'm back after a long delay to deal with other pressing new (old!) house issues. Alas, window replacement decisions keep slipping though we are eager to get on with them. The question is whether replacement windows can be inserted inside our existing frames, which seem to be primarily ...

Good question WoW. I'm afraid my ignorance is showing, but here's what I can see; perhaps it's enough to give you a clue. I do have a photo, but, alas, am not set up to post it here. The window sashes are wood. They are raised and lowered with exposed rope (sash cords) that go through a vertical mem...

Thanks WoW. I wondered about the thermal properties of steel, and whether it would matter in the frame. We've had a sales rep whom we like take a look. He says that installing over the steel frames is not a big problem - though he speculates that his installer may have to cut off a few ridge-like pi...

Elementary Installation Question - Steel Frames

In anticipation of replacing old wooden windows in a 1930s brick house, we've noticed that some of the old window frames contain steel. In some cases there appears to be some sort of steel cladding tacked down over the lower half of the frame, in other cases the entire frame appears to be steel. If ...

We too are shopping for windows in the DC area, and we have not been enamored with the Schuco dealer we found in Beltsville. Re the appearance of vinyl windows - which is of great concern to us - you might want to take a look at the Sunrise Restorations. I have seen postings from at least one of the...

PrairieRider - Thanks for the info. Are those Canadian fiberglass windows (Omniglass, Inline) available as insert replacement windows, or are they produced only for original construction? Would you know if they are sold in the Washington DC area? If so, do you know how their prices compare with the ...

Thanks for the tips Blackhatch. To my knowledge the frames are wood - but I will have to look very carefully to be certain that I am not missing anything. And thanks for confirming the likely desirability in this case of installing from the inside.

Thanks Randy. That's pretty much the way I would have summarized the prior postings on this and other threads. For us, painting (or natural wood look) is not important since we want the window interiors to be an off white. We just don't want the REALLY bright vinyl white, so we are confining our cho...

We've been looking for windows for a house in Washington DC for a couple of months, and have not yet found anyone to work with in this area who even begins to measure up to many of the mid-western and western installers who post to this board. Very sad to say, but instead of getting advice about wha...

In our search for replacement windows we have evolved from vinyl to wood to fiberglass, largely for esthetic reasons (we don't like the thick, cold-white frames of many vinyl windows ) ... but having read this informative thread, perhaps we will evolve right back to (the more delicate choices in ) v...

Many thanks, PK and FenEx, for sharing your expertise, and for setting standards that we should expect in an installation! I feel lucky to have access to you … especially FenEx when you are busy with a new baby. (Please accept congratulations from a grateful stranger.) Interestingly, the pitch to us...

Pros and cons of installing windows from inside or outside

We’re ordinary, not particularly window-savvy, homeowners who are seeking to replace about 20 original double hung windows in a 1930s brick house. Until recently, every window salesman we’ve spoken with has told us that his company would install the windows from the outside and that it would take ab...

LOL! Thanks Window4U for your wonderful economy of words.

So may I ask what folks recommend for a quality (aluminum or vinyl) clad double hung wooden window? For a 1930's brick house in Washington DC (i.e., a mixed, but primarily heating, climate). Thanks!
