Re: Some help with new Patio Sliders!

Andersen’s 100 Series should work out well for you. The local Andersen by Renewal teams have been using the Fibrex units for a long time. The product has gone through some upgrades to fix past imperfections with product. I think they’ve pretty much ironed out all the bugs. You should be fine with yo...

Re: Cutting out a foggy pane

Delaware Mike you and I can totally agree on the 4” Putty Knife! Mine is 30 plus years old and I’ll bring bodily harm to anyone that removes it from my nail bags! I’ve put new handles on it twice. I’ve taped it to 16’ PVC pipe to reach up and cut glazing tape on a window above a deck. The blade is w...

Re: Awning Windows for emergency egress

We’ve run into this issue a couple times. Each time we did it was with Pellas window. Pella fixed it with what we call Swing Clear Hardware. This lets the sash swing out from the opening to give you more area to meet egress codes. I’m pretty sure most manufacturers carry some kind of swing clear opt...

Re: Dissimilar glass, does it matter which number comes first?

Todd is right on. The Laminate glass gives us the best sound protection. The next step is the spacer being used in the IGU. Sometimes the spacer has to be downsized in order to meet the windows glass pocket. If the maximum IGU is one inch they can’t exceed that width. So the thicker your glass choic...

Re: Window leak - long screws

I’m glad you’re doing well! Life is really all about the way we go through it. The Marine Corp taught me long ago to hit life like you own it. Today I don’t have that killer instinct. I’ve learned I can tackle most anything with a positive mind set and good communication skills. Take care brother an...

Hope I’m finding you and your family in great health brother. I’ll try and spend more time here. Hope you have...

Re: Dissimilar glass, does it matter which number comes first?

The glass choices can be very different. Here’s the choices I see most. The glass one and two can be flipped either way. I’d recommend the TWO on the exterior. These are for a single slider unit 1/8” one 3/16” two. STC 33 Casement 34 1/8” one 1/4” two. STC 33 Casement 35 1/8” one Laminate two STC 34...

Re: Replace 3rd floor windows Houston, TX

Randy you speak the truth. Certification has almost become more of a joke than anything. If I had a dollar for every installer who told me he was the best certified person I’d find, I could have retired in a warmer climate. Finding a company with a good reputation and high reviews carries more weigh...

Re: Lamination and the window's weight

I was fortunate to visit Milgards factory out in the Northwest a few years back. I know they had gone through a huge change in hardware and changing design flaws. The manufacturing process Milgard offers are plentiful. You can get thicker glass inside and out when it comes to the Insulated Glass Uni...

Re: I like Marvin windows - working out the details

I agree with HomeSealed on this one! My Son runs my business now that I’ve retired. He’s Marvin’s top installer here in MN. His crew does nothing but Marvin’s upper end products. One thing he has told me about Marvin is they don’t mess around with their product not being installed properly. If the i...

Re: Issues replacing windows with bricks and shutters around opening?

Home Sealed and WOW are spot on with pocket replacements. You will lose glass space for sure. In my opinion here in MN we pull the entire unit. Only because they look like old weight and pully windows. The weight pockets on each side and the two mull posts that separate the units are hollow boxes. T...

Re: Replacement Windows - New construction vs Full frame

A full frame replacement and new construction install are the same thing in my eyes. They both require a window with a nailing or mounting strip to fasten the window with. Since you have four inch trim boards around the exterior make this a no brainer. By removing those trim boards you’ll reveal the...

Re: Window leak - long screws

If you look at that screw in your sill you can see the foam filled hole above it. That’s the hole for the fastener. It seals up as it sets into the foam filled frame. There’s usually a bag of hole plugs to finish it off. The window should have been shimmed at these factory holes. Some frames come wi...
