Re: Provia vs. Seaway

I'm not a fan of ProVia's vinyl sliding patio doors. Way too many problems with them. The mechanical frame is under engineered in my opinion and too flimsy. The handlesets are very fussy and hard to dial in which leads to service calls. I'm fine with Sunrise or the Soft-Lite, however I like the OKNA...

Re: Marvin, Harvey or other brand?

You're in Harvey's and Paradigm's backyards. Both of those manufacturers are below "even for even series"from OKNA, Soft-Lite, Sunrise, Kensington, and Vytex in my opinion. Sunrise is still crazy on lead times. I think the Harvey lines are a little dated and don't care for their glass spac...

You can hit me up on Facebook if anyone in the family has an account as messenger is pretty fast. Long days installing and then running estimates at night. Plus a full moon, some howling in order.

Re: Replacement Windows in Connecticut

Flanged installation would be a real pain with those asbestos tiles. I prefer inserts with nice aluminum capping. If full frame new construction windows are installed, one would be loosening and removing surrounding asbestos tiles. Some kind of trim board would need to go over the flanges and then t...

Re: What size window to order?

With existing flanged builder's aluminum windows the actual side view of the window/jamb can be offset with a different interior (fits the rough opening) and a smaller exterior that would stick off the face of the sheathing. You don't want too big or small obviously. Some have flat jamb builds meani...

Re: Dissimilar glass in Ohio area?

The balance cover is the attractive longer snap in piece that covers the open jamb. The stupid thing at the top that is about 4" is what I refer to as a sash stop. I'm with you it's sort of dated and ugly. It has a purpose. In most cases it's obscured by the blinds and window treatments. I trie...

Re: Window Replacement - South of Atlanta

Geometric radius capping isn't fun, but we do it. Did some hard ones this week. Tomorrow's circle top was sold as a full frame new construction unit and we optioned for a fancy 1" x 6" Azek prefab surround from the same outfit that makes them for Andersen locally.

Re: Vinyl Double Hungs in Ohio for $500 ish??? Screen options? VT and glass surface area... mind numb!

I'm not a fan of that particular series of extrusions from ProVia's extruder. It comes from a huge family of similar styles and I'll never understand how they put those dated vinyl snap in sash stops in the jambs like a 1980's window when other's have omitted them? The top sash stops are often hidde...

The ProVia Endure is decent. I'd rate it hire than a Barrington. I've installed Barrington's in the past and that line is okay. We do a decent amount of Endures when for whatever reason I'm not putting folks into my main OKNA series. ProVia has some new construction options what OKNA doesn't offer. ...

Re: Flashing Details on Quote

Installation Masters training and DuPont's directions on their products is the same from what I remember? If's been a longtime since I sat through that program. Good stuff. We exceed most of those practices. I don't like paintable interior finishes unless someone is the like the best detail painter ...

Re: Flashing Details on Quote

It's nice to deal with an outfit that has someone in charge of installations that also has customer service skills. They should be leaping at the opportunity to simply state what product line or comparable products and methodology. It's not rocket science and there a ton of flashing information out ...

Re: Ordering Soft-lite Elements

.01 to .02 is like splitting frog hairs in air leakage. Imagine getting a new hybrid car and it gets 58.8 MPG but that's with the premium package which was 50lbs. lighter than the standard model. The standard gets 58.2 MPG. See where I'm going with this. I ditched SL a few years ago and was an Eleme...

May I ask, why can't you just go with the Imperial Elite? It can be optioned up with almost everything to the Elements series but the locks.

Re: Replacing an aluminum window

I like a flanged new construction unit too, however not seeing everything regarding the finish work I would write my contract stating that if the flange didn't allow the interior set to make sense, the installers could in the field simply zip the flange off the frame to allow for a deeper pocket set...

Re: Some windows comparable to KHPP Genesis?

The bigger question is how are other outfits coming in with their pricing so low? My guess is that they're sending out Larry, Moe, and Curley. All our windows and materials are costing us dealers so much more than a few years ago and my pay to installers has went up 25%. Gas and tolls are up, dump f...
