Re: Window comparisons

That is a really good price on the Ultimates to be honest.

Its the prettiest and most elegant of the 4 there. The Sunrise is the leader in the clubhouse for performance.

Re: Great Lakes Comfort Smart vs Milgard Trinsic

Milgard is no longer available to us East of the Rockies...but it seems to have a good reputation.

Re: First Time Replacement Window Advice

Can you paint vinyl...yes. It requires a very clean substrate and a very specific paint formulation. That said...I wouldn't paint it in the capacity that a homeowner can paint it at home. The windows are painted with a specialty paint and despite my concerns early on, we have painted windows that ar...

Re: New windows have smaller glass area

+1.

Between two fairly popular brands that are discussed on here and one of which is available at the big box stores...there is almost a full 1" in terms of frame size on EACH SIDE.

If your contractor is not cognizant of that...you can get a very bulky looking window...really quickly.

Re: New windows have smaller glass area

Let's see some measurements on what you have.

Often cited claim by fiberglass manufacturers, but not necessarily true if you are looking at one of the narrower profile vinyl windows.

Re: Casements vs Sliders vs DH

46" is doable with a good window in a DH...but they do look "fat" if they are short. Not a great look.

Sliders do leak more air than DH and more than casements.

All the good brands have a good casement equivalent.

+1.

Provia makes a decent door. Their windows are not on the level of those other two.

Re: Softlite vs Okna vs Provia Windows

In that comparison...Elements all the way. Really good window and that is a great deal on that set of options (i.e. triple pane).

For what it's worth, the idea of not using subcontractors is of ZERO value in my book by the way. Best installers I have ever had, are subs.

Re: Replacement Window Research

Well, as long as you are doing the comparison, the data (thermal and structural and air) on the Okna is a bit better. The restorations is a great window, but if we are talking about data comparisons, the Okna is the better performer.

Still wouldn't "overshoot" on the solar control in the Norther region. No reason to go as high as Low-e 366 in that case. Not needed.

Wire brush on a drill end. They haven't rusted that much from before so just knock off the loose stuff and repaint them with a proper enamel. You can do it from inside for that matter.

He is correct.

We cap up to them, but never to the front faces.

I would get them all painted before you start the windows.
