Re: Incorrectly framed new window installation

If you are doing it, I would stick to the Schluter system of waterproofing. Most bulletproof and well engineered systems I have seen to be honest. Back to the framing, if there is a second floor above that window, it should be at LEAST a 2x6 header. Depending on floor joist direction, that would be ...

Re: Soundproofing Vinyl vs Fiberglass

Where is the home located and what is the construction of the current window? Anything you do in a dedicated STC class is NOT going to match up with the projection of your current window. Window material is far less impactful than is the glazing type and air infiltration rates. Have you considered i...

Re: What replacement parts do I need for these Milgard windows?

You can call them if you like, but you'd probably be better sourcing it 3rd party. Milgard didn't make that balance, just used it in the operation of their window. It's call a "Side-Load" balance spring. There should be a number or stamping on it that will indicate it's size and they can b...

Re: Okna 500 Double Pane vs Provia Endure Triple Pane

Back to the window question, I think its really leaning heavily in the favor of the 500 series.

What about the one company gives you the not warm and fuzzies?

Re: Identifying brand of window

Yeah. Won't be able to track it down like that. Obviously not under warranty any longer. Was it just the glass?

Any other markings on the window? Any picture you can add of the window? That would help.

Re: Performance Ratings vs "Features"

I would imagine that the STC upgrade in the glass is a big chunk of that differential. Offset glazing isn't cheap.

Re: American Window Systems V85

it's a very good price...and definitely in that "too good" range. If you have two other quotes that are more consistent, should give you a bit of pause about the outlier. In this market, with the cost of goods and labor, you can't do a good window and install for the number you are quoted ...

Re: What windows/material for a brutal cold/hot/windy climate?

Fiberglass being the most dimensional stable material is a good talking point for the FG window industry. Wood is more stable as it pertains to temperature with about 1/10th of the expansion with temperature. That said, some of the super high efficiency units in the triple pane space will be in FG.

Re: Incorrectly framed new window installation

Suffice...maybe. With roof load...maybe not. A 3.5" header is not appropriate in most jurisdictions for spanning a 4' opening.

Re: Over- and Under-whelmed!

There is an option for a sash reinforcement on the Sunrise that really should be their standard.

Re: Window project stalled, need help.

Goodness me...that is a bunch of quotes and a bunch of different materials.

What do you want is the larger question?

I think you got the thermal data on the Alpen swapped as well. Milgard makes a nice window and I wouldn't touch the WW, Pella,...and probably the Simonton.
