Re: Name of group of windows that fits between studs? No header?

...and there are the pics. That's a factory mulled quad unit. No studs in between, and it will have a header above the opening. Again, curious to know what would make you think that there wouldn't be? Because all the windows measure like they would have fit between studs.. Thanks for the clarificat...

Re: Name of group of windows that fits between studs? No header?

I am not aware of a specific name for that. Small no header, or headerless stud pocket. DE Mike and I could get creative: direct glaze IGU over the edges of stud then jamb ot studs, or Just paint or cap the studs gives you VG 14 1/2" or 22 1/2". I have not seen a 24" OC in ages. wayn...

Name of group of windows that fits between studs? No header?

I have four windows that are right next to each other, and "look" like they are all separate windows which fit tight between 16" on center studs.. The rough openings must be 14 1/2". What is the name of this style of window, which I'm assuming does not require a header, only bloc...

Are storm windows a thing of the past?

As I paint the sill, I'm convinced that my aluminum/glass storm windows have helped my old double pane wood windows survive the years.. But Ive read installing storm windows over new vinyl windows could actually hurt performance by over heating and warping the window.. Pretty sure we all agr...

Re: Search function?

There were two search boxes in the upper right hand corner, with the lower one being the problem child. That one has been removed. If you could try again and let us know how it goes that would help others attempting the same thing. Thanks for that and my notification must not be set up. Yeah it loo...

Re: 86 x 42 storm window question..

Rebar I applaud your enthusiasm on educating yourself on this project. I'm just A. retentive like that. Hell, I told a installer I really like and respect, I didn't want his Alside windows because of what you guys said about them! When I do these types of Windows I clear the opening out to the conc...

Re: 86 x 42 storm window question..

The Lindsay window is made here in MN. I use it for full frame replacements religiously!! The fixed brickmould has a snap on cover to conceal mounting screws. I have had great luck with these windows for years. As for your concerns on vinyl it will last longer than you will if installed properly. I...

Re: 86 x 42 storm window question..

Did you see samples of Lindsay and Provia? The Pinnacle from Lindsay is 90% the same product as the Provia mentioned. I say 90% because they are more or less using the same parts although the other 10% which is the most important is the manufacturing differences. .05Ai vs .11 Ai for Lindsay. Lindsa...

Re: 86 x 42 storm window question..

Full tear outs with stained interior trim make the pricing more in range. I don't have a problem paying for quality. But didn't expect $2100 especially when I initially figured all I needed was a storm. The DH pisses me off because this home was advertised as four bedroom, yet the fourth was non co...

Re: 86 x 42 storm window question..

I received a reply from knebel windows who gave me a estimate.. "For the ProVia Endure (the upper line) windows installed you’d be about $2100.00. If we changed to a mid grade from either ProVia or Lindsay, the overall price would drop about $ 50.00 – 100.00. This price includes factory stained...

Re: How do I know if installer is qualified and honest?

Ask who they are voting for. That's rich toddinmn. A buddy at work recommended his nephew who remodels and builds custom homes. It sounded like he pays allot of attention to details.. So I texted him and asked if he can get three of the most recommended windows Iv read about here, or what win...

How do I know if installer is qualified and honest?

Having worked in the trades, Ive worked around some serious cobblers and hacks. But if I were to have met them before seeing their work, they could have talked me into believing just about anything. How do I know if installer is qualified and honest before hiring them? Or what things should I ask wi...

Re: 86 x 42 storm window question..

I checked around for Quantum, Provia, Allied, Mon-Ray and found the local company knebelwindows, who deals with Provia and Mon-Ray storms. But when I sent them the pictures, Dan Knebel wants to sell me a new window because, and I now have to agree, the prime window isn't in the best of shape. Knebel...

Re: 86 x 42 storm window question..

It is a small volume project and you will be lucky to find some one to do just the install for $300. Yes that's what I'm learning. Ive talked to two different window contractors who blew me off already. It looks like I'm on my own and I'm worried I will break the storm removing it. I would rather h...
