Re: Window choices in Atlanta area

Alside is a no go, from any contractor. As to option #2, getting replacement sashes to fit with old frames is very rarely successful, in my experience. Air tightness is a critical component of making new windows energy efficient, and that will be one of the leakiest options possible. Stick with your...

Re: Premium Replacement Windows

The Window Nerd is your very best option in the Philadelphia area for their combination of integrity, installation detail and product selection. You’ll be surprised at their level of knowledge compared to the companies you met with previously.

Re: Windows on a budget?

From my post # 7: "They will be out of warranty, since the transfer timeframe is limited to 10 years. However, if they are Don Young windows, you could order new IG units (insulated glass) from them and have them changed out.” The original owner gets a lifetime warranty on the entire window, no...

Re: Windows on a budget?

I think they are DY as hey did how onto that lock longer than others, plus the glazing bead is aluminum. Most other manufacturers in this area use vinyl. Jon is a really great guy - you are in good hands.

Re: Windows on a budget?

Can you post any photos of the interior, particularly showing the lock? They will be out of warranty, since the transfer timeframe is limited to 10 years. However, if they are Don Young windows, you could order new IG units (insulated glass) from them and have them changed out. The Window Nerd is pr...

Re: Windows on a budget?

Hello George. Replacing the insulated glass units will be cheaper than replacing the entire window. How long ago did you purchase the house? They look like Don Young thermally-broken aluminum windows, but I thought they had moved away from the Swiggle Seal spacer more than 15 years ago. Perhaps I’m ...

Re: Replacement Windows Dallas area

Hi Kathy. I understand your reasoning, and while there might be a slight advantage to having Cardinal assemble the IG unit, it’s not enough of a difference to sway me one way or the other.

Re: Replacement Windows Dallas area

The options for better vinyl windows are limited in DFW, unfortunately. Anlin’s pocket sill is always a non-starter for me. It’s a poor design that increases profitability for the manufacturer but serves the customer poorly. Burris TectView uses a sloped sill and it's a decent window, but I would lo...

I agree with HomeSealed. The Pella should be ruled out.

Re: Need help deciding on replacement windows — Austin, TX — ProVia vs Window World vs RbA

I haven’t done a job in Austin in over 5 years, however, I may consider expanding our reach to that area again.

To the OP, if you want to email me at: randy@ultrawindows.net, I would be happy to discuss the options with you.

Re: Best soundproofing option?

Laminated is pretty much always the best option for noise reducing glass. There are others here much smarter than me on this, but if NT uses double strength glass on the outer and inner panes with single strength glass on the center pane, it could be pretty good as well. If all three panes are singl...

Re: Waiver for NT Twinsulator U-Factor?

"The Milgard makes code in dual pane with a VLT of .57."

1. Is Milgard an option in Texas?

2. What specifically is the code where the OP lives?

Re: Waiver for NT Twinsulator U-Factor?

To the OP, what Todd neglected to mention is that an aluminum window that meets code will require accepting a VT rating of .37 - .41. So if you're good with dark windows that greatly reduce the amount of light coming in, they might indeed be an option worth considering. From my experience, very few ...

Re: Waiver for NT Twinsulator U-Factor?

I seriously doubt you would get a waiver unless you’re doing a remodel large enough to allow for offsets. Permits for window replacement in Texas are a revenue generator (permit purchase + increased property tax value) and a way for bureaucrats to exercise control over what homeowners do with their ...
