Re: Solace patio door is it the same as sunrise restorations?

Its actually the opposite, the softlite is welded on 3 sides will a mechanically fastened sill if I recall, where the Sunrise frame is not welded. In general, I DO strongly favor a welded frame, but Sunrise does a darn good job with their design on the door. Again, I'd say either will serve you quit...

Re: Okna 400 vs. Okna 500

Good windows (500), but these are 2010 prices. That is below raw cost for the window and a qualified installation in my neck of the woods, not to mention the ancillary materials (coil, caulk, foam, shims, etc), and all overhead expenses and profit. Even a guy doing side jobs with a "tail light warra...

Re: How much spacing/gap needed for large window installation?

+1. Original openings are typically out of square, but the new window units need to be square. At times, one corner may be tight and another could be 1/2" gap. In a full frame or shape application like that, the gap can be bigger as well. I agree with Masterext, all looks pretty normal in your pictu...

Re: Solace patio door is it the same as sunrise restorations?

If you want another option on the Softlite door, I'd be very surprised if there is not another Softlite dealer that serves your location unless you are far off the beaten path. Softlite will typically have a small handful of dealers in a given market. The each sell a different window line (most of t...

Re: Quote in Rhode Island

+1 to the recommendations on the LS being the preferred choice here. Regarding pricing, be careful about getting caught up comparing to someone else. Different market, possibly different installation style, different circumstances from one home to the next, possibly different option content, etc. It...

Re: Solace patio door is it the same as sunrise restorations?

Regarding the installation, be careful about the distinction between "right" and "best", especially as it pertains to a door put in 10 years ago. Foam and a sill pan/membrane are preferred and much more common today, but there were many installers stuffing loose fg to insulate around units years ago...

Re: Laminated vs Painted vinyl

Both are proven options at this point in time with painted exterior being most common. If you are choosing between two products, I wouldn't let this be a deciding factor either way. There is a false narrative out there that painting vinyl is some sort of issue. Back before properly specified paint c...

Re: Quote for Okna 600 Replacements

I agree with the other pros. The 600 is a great window. The 800, 1000, and Starmark Evo all slot in above it in the Okna lineup, but as WoW said, the 600 is worlds better than most windows out there and is an elite level performer. I suspect that the installer tried to downplay the 800 a little beca...

Re: Solace patio door is it the same as sunrise restorations?

Sounds like a solid plan rcs, as long as you aren't spending toooo much on trying to fix the existing door. Its possible that there could be some air coming in around the unit, but again, keep in mind that the door itself is not supremely airtight even with a perfect install. On the plan to wait and...

Re: Solace patio door is it the same as sunrise restorations?

RCS, looks like you found some old posts about the Solace brand. From what I can gather, its not an Owens Corning offering anymore, however it is still a "brand name" offered by Sunrise, just not nearly as common as the Restorations and other names discussed. The Solace Windows website clearly shows...

Re: Are storm windows a thing of the past?

+1. Insulated glass (double or triple pane), low e coatings, air tight designs, and inorganic exterior window materials have all made storms unneeded at best when newer windows are in place, and often detrimental as explained above. They still perform a function for folks that want to maintain their...

Re: vinyl replacement windows in Cleveland

Hi HomeSealed - On a thread about windows in Michigan you had this comment: "Sunrise does not achieve Energy Star for the Northern Zone (in double hung) with a standard single surface low e coating on double pane glass. They resort to glass coatings that are not ideal for your climate. You would be...

Re: First time buying windows - got a low quote, should I go with it?

There are only a few possible reasons for a very low price: 1) Very low product and install costs based on low quality. 2) An organization that has no idea how to price jobs in a sustainable manner. This point alone is why the vast majority of contractors fail very quickly. 3) Very low overhead. Typ...

Re: Michigan window replacement

The Sunrise hierarchy is : Restorations Vanguard Verde Sunrise Essentials There may be one that I'm forgetting, but I think that's it. The top 4 are all based on the same "chassis" with different levels of options like sash reinforcement, foam fill, etc. Even then, I believe it possible to add optio...

Re: Michigan window replacement

What do you mean by ranges samstar? Are you referring to model, glass type, performance ratings, or something else? As far as the models, The Restorations is the best offering from Sunrise with the Vanguard and Verde being good as well (similar content). The base Sunrise is as low as I would recomme...
