Re: STC question

I would disagree on what type of windows are more airtight. It will depend on the brand that decides the order. For example, Anderson 400 series casement is 0.05, the double hung is 0.03 and the slider is 0.11. Okna has double hungs and casements listed at 0.01. Geeking has casements at 0.03 and sl...

Re: STC question

+1. Out of the box, in order of "air-tightness": Casement > DH > Slider. The only thing that I like to caution on casements, is that they do sag over time and that can cause increase air leakage. Not as much of a concern for better quality units, not to mention that they have adjusters built in now ...

Re: Vinyl replacement window and drip edge

+1. 1) Pics would help 2) Why are you trying to cut off a drip edge? (the reason may be valid, but its not normally advisable) 3) If aluminum, score and snap would be cleanest. Using a cutting wheel is likely to look pretty choppy unless you are planning to cover this somehow, which again should be ...

Re: Window Replacement - South of Atlanta

I would not consider the Essentials, but the base "Sunrise" is good, and is the basis for the higher end Verde, Vanguard, and Restorations. They each just have different levels of upgrades. I believe that sash reinforcement is optional but not standard in that model, I'd opt for that if its availabl...

Re: Window Replacement - South of Atlanta

Sounds like the leads on Sunrise and Polaris are probably worth following. The 3 5/8" jamb depth mentioned doesn't make much sense. The "pocket" in original wood windows that a new replacment window would fit into is 3 1/4" +/-, a 3 5/8" window wouldn't fit that. That's also much smaller than a norm...

Re: Window Replacement - South of Atlanta

Saying that the reviews here for Zen are "mixed" is a rather rosy interpretation. On WC, I have to admit that I don't know anything about this company, but if their website is any indication, that's not a good sign. Bunch of broken links and images, etc. From what I could gather, the 900 series is a...

"Different in what way Wayne? Different like comparing a product that is a negligible percentage of a given manufacturers production (bay's and jamb extensions), with a product that is the vast majority of what another produces (wood interior windows)?" Brandon: No difference about volume, just the...

+1. The install options are dependent on very specific circumstances. Generally speaking, RBA has limited, systemized installation types that they offer, so that may or may not be the best for your situation. On the product, if you like the thought of composite windows, something like the Okna Starm...

@jmchan: I know that this isn't what you will want to hear, but I'd suggest another quote or two. In a half-million dollar home, you are right to worry that low end windows will look out of place, and make no mistake, $500 windows ($20k ish for 40 units) is a very low end price. -The Marvin window i...

"While I agree that Pella has made progress, there is a big, hairy, stinky, steaming caveat on their "lifetime" warranty. Damage due to condensation is still only 10 years of coverage (not lifetime), and that is the most common source of premature failure for wood windows. They did fix the design f...

Re: Window Suggestion Help - Vinyl vs ? - Have Quotes

Pella has put their money where their mouth is, limited lifetime, they say they have fixed it. But their past and present, how they treat customers that had frame failures, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. As with most companies the upper and middle manangement is product blind. So a limited yes to ...

Re: Window Suggestion Help - Vinyl vs ? - Have Quotes

blackmammoth, this will come as no surprise, but in Northern VA you really need to have Windows on Washington come out and take a look. The Okna 800 is a great window, one of the more attractive vinyl windows out there, and would serve you very well. That said, based on some of your concerns on viny...
