Re: Inserts or Full Replacement

+1. Nothing in those pics to say that full tearouts would be needed, but certainly a more in depth inspection would be advisable.

Re: Sunrise vs Great Lakes- Help

Dbooth, those numbers will all be very important in that case based on your location. Look for the following: U Value : .27 for Energy Star unless its a special high solar gain package SHGC : something like .25 or higher unless you have triple pane glass, that can dip a little lower as a trade-off f...

Re: Exasperated with window repair

Its possible that only one side was bowed so both didn't need to be addressed, although its certainly also possible that they took the path of least resistance which again isn't likely to offer a long term solution. Regarding the balance, it depends on the system, some can be "adjusted", s...

Re: Sunrise vs Great Lakes- Help

Where are you located? Are these double hung or casements? If double hung, it sounds like both options are coming with glass that has surface 4 (interior surface) low e. If you are in a moderate climate that's fine, but if you are in a cold area that sees window condensation in the winter months, th...

Re: Provia vs. Seaway

+1.

-Which models?
-What is the price? Neither of these are top tier options, you may be able to find a better window for the money
-Where are you located? Some products are regional, we may be able to offer recommendations on product or even install company based on location.

Re: Replacement Window Research

Good feedback above. -The Restorations is good, the Okna 600 is has an edge in performance however and is stronger. If you like the Restorations contractor better then that may still be a winning option combined with a better price, but if you like the Okna installer as well or better than I'd say y...

Re: Exasperated with window repair

Sounds like the side jambs were bowed out and needed to be brought back in. Will this fix be sufficient? Hard to say. There should be shims in there, if only screws were used to "suck" the frame in that isn't ideal long term... and especially if the windows were installed with nail fins. T...

Re: Replace or wait?

I agree with Window Nerd's list, although I'd swap Vytex for Polaris in my region. You will want a mid to upper end model from each company, their entry level products are leave something to be desired.

Re: Replace or wait?

Those ratings listed are the maximum allowable and not the actual rating. Anything over .2 is atrocious, over .1 is marginal (although sliders are typically the leakiest type of window so some good models are in the teens), and .05 or less is very good. The best are .03-.01. As far as seal failure, ...

Re: Replacement Window Research

+1. Polaris makes some performers, but that price is sketchy as is the lack of service that you mentioned. The Sunrise options sound good, hopefully the Okna appt goes well. Infinity fiberglass is nice, but you are paying a lot for a window that doesn't perform all that well.

Re: Replace or wait?

Get the air infiltration ratings on the units that you are considering. None of those that you mentioned is very good, but its good to have the rating for comparison

Re: Norandex vs Slocomb vs. Keep shopping

While I don't think that you had any home run options here, I think that you had a better option or two. I'd agree with eddie's comments being on the harsh side, but there is some truth in there as well. Anyone selling a decent window installed in the $500's these days won't likely be around long, a...

Re: Window Insulation Help

Have you verified that the depth of the old window is the same as the new? Its common for the older new construction vinyls to have a more narrow frame (depth) which will create an issue for you. In that case you'd have to cut back drywall which is messy and often leads to more patching etc. Most pr...

Re: Guidance on leaking double window

Agreed. Pretty easy to do to either fix the issue or rule it out as the main culprit. Sounds like its at least contributing if not the entire source of the issue.
