Re: Mulling: Factory vs On-Site

That strip of vinyl would be referred to as mullion, or specifically a zero degree mullion that joints the windows together. When the factory does this they typically add stainless steel union mulling plates to the top and bottom jambs as that adds more strength to it for transport and loading/unlo...

Re: Name of group of windows that fits between studs? No header?

Gotcha. Just coincidence here. Definitely not the case, and in a few decades in this business I can't say that I've ever run into that. I'm sure that people have done it, don't get me wrong, just very uncommon and not advisable. Are you looking at replacing this unit? ...Let us know if there's any o...

Re: Name of group of windows that fits between studs? No header?

...and there are the pics.

That's a factory mulled quad unit. No studs in between, and it will have a header above the opening.

Again, curious to know what would make you think that there wouldn't be?

Re: Name of group of windows that fits between studs? No header?

Any pics? That arrangement would definitely be unconventional, it's more likely that there is a continuous header over the entire bank of windows and these just happen to be sized to look like they are placed between studs. Anything is possible of course, just curious to know if there is any reason ...

Re: Mulling: Factory vs On-Site

If done using factory supplied materials, onsite mulling will provide the exact same finished product as it would if it were done at the factory. Some have their own methods, but generally speaking, these types of units will come factory assembled when under a size that makes shipping and handling w...

Re: Very large replacement project

OP, one nice thing about fiberglass windows like Marvins Elevate, Essential or the Infinity series is that Fiberglass has a same basic expansion and contraction rate as glass. Thus, you get significantly less seal failures and frame failures. Fiberglass has strength and because of that you generall...

Re: ProVia vs Ideal vs Okna 400/500/800 in LI

1) Amen to Nashville 1957 2) I'd really focus on vetting the dealers here based on the pricing. Being in business for a long time is a nice start, but dig deeper. For instance, we have a company in my area that claims to have been in business for 30 years. In reality, they've been an actual company ...

The two pros that commented directly before you (The Window Nerd and Delaware Mike) serve different parts of Philadelphia if I'm not mistaken, either one would be an excellent choice.... A couple of the best in the business.

Re: ProVia vs Ideal vs Okna 400/500/800 in LI

That is really good/ low pricing, about a decade behind. ^^^THIS!^^^ That Okna 500/800 pricing is about $5-8k below average these days. This is not "Premium pricing". Same for the Ideal. That one is even more mind-blowing if it's a reputable company. Put it this way, it's good that you go...

Re: Window Quotes in Tennessee

The Okna/Window Works option sounds compelling. +1 to WoW's comments on the Aeris. Performance is pretty typcial of a window with real wood interior which is to say, not great. Something like a Marvin Elevate is probably nicer and more tried and true in that same price range. Not awful, but bot anyt...

Re: Okna 800 vs SoftLite Elements vs GreatLakes ComfortSmart

Pasting my response from the other site: The Great Lakes window doesn't belong here. The Okna 800 and Elements are a couple of the top performers out there today and either would serve you well. I prefer the 800 personally with small advantage in performance and strength, and with slimmer lines for ...

Re: SILICONE vs POLYURETHANE

OSI Quad and Quad Max are pretty much the gold standard for most applications. Solar seal is also decent, and Vulkem is good for some applications.
Some guys like silicone on the exterior, I'm not a fan personally.

Re: Replacement windows near Kansas City

Great feedback above. Additionally, the advantage in the ratings (air leakage, design pressure, U value with like glass) is not insignificant in favor of the Elements. A few points in each area is a larger difference than you may think, and is really indicative of the quality of the engineering and ...
