Re: Window comparisons

+1. Last time I checked Lindsay uses the same "chassis" as several other window manufacturers including Provia and some others. Its a very limiting way to build a window IMO, difficult to make improvements, etc. I've heard the same as Todd regarding operations as well, but I've not experie...

Re: Window comparisons

+1. The Ultimate and Sunrise are both very good but for different reasons. I'd suggest working through your priorities for the project to see whether wood or vinyl windows better fit what you are looking for. The former has unmatched richness, the latter is the performance choice.

Re: Softlite vs Okna vs Provia Windows

While I like Provia better than Thermatru, the delta between those two doors is less than it is between the Okna and Provia windows IMO. I'd choose the Okna/TT combo all day every day over Provia for both... You could also ask the Okna dealer (and SL dealer as well) if they can offer the Provia door...

Re: First Time Replacement Window Advice

Homesealed, That is some interesting insight regarding bronze colored windows that built up heat and twisted because of it. Do you recall if the bronze color was the base color of the vinyl? Have you seen any issues with darker colored (coated/painted) exteriors causing the same heat up and twistin...

Re: Coil trim?

As the other guys said, this is pretty standard stuff, its the way that probably 80%+ of replacement windows are finished on the exterior.

Couple thoughts:

1) What does your contract say about this?
2) Pics would help for better feedback as to the details of the install

Re: First Time Replacement Window Advice

Jmil1989, You listed your 13 windows to be replaced and I see you have several different style (casement, slider, picture, awning). Are you replacing them all like for like style wise for each opening or are you going to all one type of window? I also hear you loud and clear on the color choices. I...

Re: New windows have smaller glass area

Good info above, there are multiple possible causes here: -Install type (pocket replacements if chosen are downsized by definition) -Window choice, some are more slim-lined than others -Measurements. Its possible that they were measured small, but based on your reference of .25" on each side, t...

Re: Softlite vs Okna vs Provia Windows

What type of entry door are the Okna and Softlite dealers offering? Provia does make nice entry and storm doors. Windows are a different animal... I do agree with the thought of getting the windows and doors from the same installation company, get a better deal and only have to deal with one group. ...

Re: Softlite vs Okna vs Provia Windows

Sounds like an easy choice for the Okna at that price and especially if that includes and eyebrow window that Softlite does not. If you upgrade to triple pane and remove the eyebrow to make the comparison truly apples to apples I suspect that the Okna will still offer some savings. That said, it wou...

Re: Replacement Window Research

If these were casements, I'd say pocket the savings and go with the Restorations as its a great unit. The fact that these are double hungs though, and especially in that large size, I'd pay more for the Okna option. Sunrise is a nice window but extra large double hungs are a slight worry on the shor...

Re: First Time Replacement Window Advice

I'd really put some more weight on quality and performance more than the color. I understand that the color is important for sure, but keep in mind that other than white and some stain colors, interior window colors have the shelf life of a carton of milk. Sandstone and clays, etc are starting to ge...

Re: Sunrise vs Great Lakes- Help

366 is often used to describe that or similar low shgc glass package. Other glass makers have similar options, Cardinal's nomenclature is just the simplest and widely known. In colder climates, 272 or equivalent is most common. Good U value, moderate SHGC. The high solar gain packages are becoming m...

Re: Softlite vs Okna vs Provia Windows

Two horse race here with a couple of great options between the Elements and Okna. I'd agree that the Elements with triple pane does appear to be the better value as presented due to the triple vs double pane, but you are in a position that you may be able to negotiate either way and get a similar pr...

Re: First Time Replacement Window Advice

1) Neither is considered a top performer. Neither are terrible either, but I'd choose the Polaris Ultraweld 7 days out of 7 over either of those choices, and frankly I'd bring the Okna back into the mix as well at a price that sounds about normal. The biggest no-no here though is sourcing the produc...
