Re: mouting replacement windows over old casing

Yes, it is normal for casing to stay in place in a replacement window install. From there, I think there may be some misunderstanding as the new window wouldn't mounted to the casing, it's screwed in through the jamb. Sales rep may have been inexperienced or just poorly communicated the methodology.

Re: Vinyl recommendations

You answered your own question. Window companies have to go to extraordinary lengths to educate people about why their window is legitimately 2 x's more expensive than another option, AND a better value at that. You might say that consumers are smart and can educate themselves - which should be tru...

+1 to Wow's feedback, hard to tell from that pic though.

Re: Power - Symphony Pella windows

Whether or not rot on the sill would justify a full frame tear out is going to depend on the amount and location of it. Even then, it may not be super clear cut one way or the other, it more a matter of anticipating whether or not observable damage likely goes deeper where repair of the RO may be ne...

Re: Power - Symphony Pella windows

I'd agree with the comment that their price is pretty cheap for that scope of work if correct. Not typical of that company from what I know. Either way, I agree with the other pros that there are better windows out there for the money. Narrow down to a few products that you like based on your resear...

Re: Opinions on Sunrise/Vanguard Interior Laminates

Depends on how discerning you are... although between the laminate and painting, you'd probably be adding at least a few hundred dollars per window and there will still be some tell-tale signs of a vinyl window like the angled corner welds... Don't get me wrong, it will look nice and there's nothing...

Re: Window installation Question?

Totally agree with DM.

Ultimately the difference here between "okay" and "avoid at all costs", is whether the area that the screw will be placed is exposed to exterior water/drainage. On PW's that is not the case, almost all large PW's will have a screw in the sill.

Re: After Install Questions

I'm afraid that those designations are generally pretty worthless. Most companies that specialize in windows at any measurable volume are dealing direct with a manufacturer. With that said, again, that bridge has been crossed so I digress. You paid a fair price, I'd look for a nicer finished product...

Re: After Install Questions

Most guys installing Simonton from ABC Supply are roofers that sell a window job here and there, but too late to change that decision. I would have added stops (shoe or something along those lines) around the window perimeter to cover the drywall cut back as opposed to the fat caulk bead. As far as ...

Re: Okna Alternative

I'd follow up on WDC's recommendation if its in your area. I know for a fact that Sunrise DID have dealers in CO, not sure if anything changed. They were purchased by Metal Industries not that long ago which is a much larger company so I'd be surprised if they were shrinking their footprint, but per...

Re: Am I missing something? Quote review

While you may not be able to do a true "insert", there are still multiple ways to install windows in this scenario and they are not all created equal. You may be correct about some different install details being at play here. I'd ask each install company to provide a written description o...

Re: Am I missing something? Quote review

$2900 is a low price for that. $2000 is a "I'm going out of business I just don't know it yet" (or maybe he does!) type of price. Half rounds aren't cheap. As WN was alluding to, please know that the awful reputation that this industry has with all of the BBB complaints etc is based mostly...

Re: Am I missing something? Quote review

Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated. Both companies are equally rated on Google (number of reviews and stars). I would prefer the 500s but with a 45 to 50% price difference. With companies being same should I bit the bullet and pay that for the 500s? Do you think I'd regret the 400s? You say 2...

+1. The 500 is the superior option. Better window, fair price, and odds are its offered from a better company as the 400 is price point based offering.

Re: "Replacements" for Attached Townhouse

By "both" we mean that they offer both types of installation and will prescribe the best one based on the circumstances of your home and your goals for the project. This decision process takes place at the time of contract, you are correct that its not practical to order windows and decide...
