Re: Soundproofing Vinyl vs Fiberglass
I wouldn't call it high quality... You are in a slight pickle, as the higher performance (ie: airtight) windows that are widely recommended aren't available in your region. That's not to say that there are no choices that fit the mold, they simply aren't the same ones that are used in the Northeast ...

Re: Soundproofing Vinyl vs Fiberglass
A couple questions I still have that I hope you could help me with: 1. Is vinyl not a concern with hot weather exposed to the sun? I am concerned about warping over the years. As long as it's a high quality product, there is no concern. 2. Is it better to get a window that is weatherproof and then ...

Re: Soundproofing Vinyl vs Fiberglass
Window material is far less impactful than is the glazing type and air infiltration rates. Bingo. Totally agree with this... although there are relatively few fiberglass windows that rate well in AI, so indirectly that can point to vinyl as a better option for your set of priorities. Find a window ...

Re: Okna 500 Double Pane vs Provia Endure Triple Pane
The exclusive Okna dealer has been very straight forward and honest, so while they are more expensive, I am very likely to go with them. I might reduce my scope of windows, and make use of the tax credit each year to offset the cost of triple pane upgrade. This sounds like a very smart plan all thi...

Re: Okna 500 Double Pane vs Provia Endure Triple Pane
The SL Imperial Elite is much better than the provia and is indeed comparable to the Okna. You would not go wrong with either of those.

Re: Identifying brand of window
+1, you'll need something else to identify that window. That said, based on the age and issue (broken glass?), you are probably better off having a local glass shop come out and quote you on glass replacement.

Re: Okna 500 Double Pane vs Provia Endure Triple Pane
The Okna is a much better window. Personally I would not consider the Provia window unless I'm shipping in the bargain bin, it's simply not very good and this is not a valid comparison. I'm a big proponent of performance ratings both for obvious reasons as well as as an indicator of quality. Once in...

Re: Performance Ratings vs "Features"
Great questions! I think that you are on the right track in looking to the performance data to see if the upgraded features make measurable improvements. One point in U value (lower is better), a couple points in CR (higher is better) and then a difference in DP and AI can indicate a larger step up(...

Re: Incorrectly framed new window installation
We can't answer exactly what is needed without knowing all of the details of your home, but you probably need a 2x6 (double) header here as opposed to 2x4. Once again, if you are needing to educate your contractor on how to do this properly, he should be paying you and not the other way around.

Pictures would help, but it does certainly sound like an odd request.

Re: Incorrectly framed new window installation
I'd agree with the others... bad news all around here. The worst part is that as alluded to above, its still not right and probably won't pass inspection. Hopefully this work is being completed with permits. I'd agree that finding a competent professional to finish this project is probably your best...

Re: Garden Windows
So in this case, would it be safe to say that most Garden windows are just remarketed, and have been made by only 2-4 manufacturers? Kind of... As alluded to above, most manufacturer don't engineer their own garden window since it's such a low volume product, so there are a few basic "chassis&...

Re: Over- and Under-whelmed!
Having 8-9 products quoted, that would seem to lay out your the price range for your scope of work in your area pretty clearly. You have at least a couple of nice options there in the Sl Elite and the Sunrise. You wouldn't go wrong with either. There are some reasons to be intrigued buy fiberglass i...
