Re: Windows in Winston-Salem, NC

Joyce is a decent window if that is a well-reviewed, reputable company. As far as franchise type companies, you could certainly do worse than the ones that offer a top product like Okna or Sunrise Restorations. Many of these companies cut corners by offering a cheap window and cheap labor, but if th...

Agreed.

Sounds like it should be a well-detailed account of this journey that may be helpful for other potential DIY'ers.

Re: YKKap vs Atrium vs Window World

What type of condition are your existing windows in, and what problems are you having that have led you to seek replacement at this time? Lower end windows generally aren't what they are cracked up to be and have a lifespan of around 10 years in many cases. You may be better off making some repairs ...

Re: Window Quotes in Tennessee

To clarify, I don't think anyone recommended Provia. Some of the faults of the Aeris line were discussed, and it (pv in general) was mentioned as the new "window of choice" for folks that don't know much about windows (ie: roofers, gc's, chucks in trucks). I can't speak for others, but I d...

Re: Okna vs Vytex vs Provia

I'd agree with TWN, opting for the strongest model from the manufacturer of your choice would be wise given the large sizes. Okna makes an outstanding window, Vytex is very good as well. You are right IMO to eliminate the Provia, it's not on the same level. As far as your choice here, my main concer...

I agree with the other pros.

Its impossible to give a full stamp of approval from behind a computer screen, however I don't see any red flags at all.

Re: Mulling: Factory vs On-Site

That strip of vinyl would be referred to as mullion, or specifically a zero degree mullion that joints the windows together. When the factory does this they typically add stainless steel union mulling plates to the top and bottom jambs as that adds more strength to it for transport and loading/unlo...

Re: Name of group of windows that fits between studs? No header?

Gotcha. Just coincidence here. Definitely not the case, and in a few decades in this business I can't say that I've ever run into that. I'm sure that people have done it, don't get me wrong, just very uncommon and not advisable. Are you looking at replacing this unit? ...Let us know if there's any o...

Re: Name of group of windows that fits between studs? No header?

...and there are the pics.

That's a factory mulled quad unit. No studs in between, and it will have a header above the opening.

Again, curious to know what would make you think that there wouldn't be?

Re: Name of group of windows that fits between studs? No header?

Any pics? That arrangement would definitely be unconventional, it's more likely that there is a continuous header over the entire bank of windows and these just happen to be sized to look like they are placed between studs. Anything is possible of course, just curious to know if there is any reason ...

Re: Mulling: Factory vs On-Site

If done using factory supplied materials, onsite mulling will provide the exact same finished product as it would if it were done at the factory. Some have their own methods, but generally speaking, these types of units will come factory assembled when under a size that makes shipping and handling w...

Re: Very large replacement project

OP, one nice thing about fiberglass windows like Marvins Elevate, Essential or the Infinity series is that Fiberglass has a same basic expansion and contraction rate as glass. Thus, you get significantly less seal failures and frame failures. Fiberglass has strength and because of that you generall...

Re: ProVia vs Ideal vs Okna 400/500/800 in LI

1) Amen to Nashville 1957 2) I'd really focus on vetting the dealers here based on the pricing. Being in business for a long time is a nice start, but dig deeper. For instance, we have a company in my area that claims to have been in business for 30 years. In reality, they've been an actual company ...

The two pros that commented directly before you (The Window Nerd and Delaware Mike) serve different parts of Philadelphia if I'm not mistaken, either one would be an excellent choice.... A couple of the best in the business.

Re: ProVia vs Ideal vs Okna 400/500/800 in LI

That is really good/ low pricing, about a decade behind. ^^^THIS!^^^ That Okna 500/800 pricing is about $5-8k below average these days. This is not "Premium pricing". Same for the Ideal. That one is even more mind-blowing if it's a reputable company. Put it this way, it's good that you go...
