Re: replacing window in Florida.
I looking for a quality window, SHGC is more important than u-factor. I feel that vinyl with double pane would be best. Just not sure who to go with. I have looked at Pella, Simonton, anderson and marvin. Why do you feel that vinyl would be best? Pella, Andersen, and Marvin all built their respecti...

Re: New Construcion-Windows!!!
The builder just uses silverline, does not recommend them, what does anyone think of jeld wen clad builders series??? for windows I think the jeld wen clad window will go nicer with an all brick exterior than everything else that has been mentioned. It may also give you more interior finish options.

Re: Cheap wood windows
Because the house has not cheap wood windows, and you want to spend less on the garage and shed windows.
That's why I would want cheap wood windows.

Re: Okna Starmark vs. Okna 500 series
My opinion is that if the LOOK of the window is important to your wife, she probably wont be satisfied with a vinyl bow window. It will have too much frame and not enough glass. The Andersen 400 would show better IMO. However, you will want to paint the interior white as as the sash members will be ...

Sounds like you are being steered towards vinyl. I don't see in reference to what type of windows are being replaced. Casements, Double Hungs, Sliders?... Just be careful with vinyl Casements. They can be fugly.

Re: harvey classic
My opinion on stretching U-Values and triple pane vinyl, is that those energy efficiency dollars could be much better utilized elsewhere in the house, like in the basement and the attic doing air-sealing and insulating. The difference between .30 and .23 does not look very good on paper, based on th...

Re: Changing aluminum sliders to Casement windows
This is exactly my problem with people coming on the forum and saying something like - I was quoted $6000 for 8 windows XYZ brand windows." "Is it too much?" And then it seems to me that regulars here too often pile on and say that's too much for that window. Then homeowners get fixat...

Re: Formula for annual heat loss, degree days = 10,917
The Answer Is... 25 area x U.52 x 10917 HHDx 24 Hours per Day x .75 Fudge Factor = 2,554,578 BTU 2.55 x $9.37 = $ 23.89 This heat loss calculation does not take into account potential air leakage around the frame, which is harder to quantify. It also does not take into account occupant behaviors inc...

Re: harvey classic
Harvey has a reputation for being a steady and solid manufacturer of good mid-range vinyl windows and some not-so-good low-end vinyl in years past also. I like the way their glass packs are looking these days from the curb view. But had a real good look at their Tribute line recently and thought the...

Re: Lead Safe Renovating Charge?
I'm not sure anyone knows quite what to charge for Lead Safe Installations yet. I think most contractors will eventually move away from per window charges and charge per zone or wall. However, $50 per window for all the work the EPA is mandating only makes sense to those who aren't actually doing th...

Re: Are these reasonable prices?
Was there a difference in the installation? Meaning were they both replacement installations? Or was the more expensive to be rebuilt as a new construction window? Aluminum sliders seem to come out better with a nail fin installation versus a pocket install, but it will cost more.

Re: Energy Efficient Windows and new laws
That price is probably a little steep, depending on the installation. Triple glazed krypton would seem over kill to me for South Eastern VA. Probably just need a good SHGC more than anything else.
