vinyl DH window air leakage
Hello...I've been in the market for a house purchase, both new or old..lots of the houses have vinyl double hung windows..on many of them I noticed air infiltration at each corner of the meeting rail..is this a sign of improper installation or just a common weak spot due to the window design? are th...

Re: softlite dh imperial ls insert air leaks
Thanks guys..just to update, I found that the vertical weatherstripping strips on the lower sash were cut about 1/4" inch too short. This created a small air gap at the meeting rail corners. Once I inserted a tiny piece of foam weatherstripping in those gaps, the air leak issue was solved. Stil...

softlite dh imperial ls insert air leaks
Hello..with the colder weather here, I've noticed slight air leaks at both of the vertical side channels where the top and bottom sashes meet..these leaks are only in those 2 corners and not elsewhere on the meeting rail...all windows affected....I've used a bit of weatherstripping foam to help plug...

seal failures on softlite imperial ls windows
Hi..on window recommendations here, I had softlite replacement double hung inserts installed about 10 years ago. Due to a superspacer backlog delay then, I chose the intercept spacer. Last year one sash had a seal failure and this year I had another one fail in a different room. The frame is holding...

Re: Pella 350 vs Sunrise Restorations Prices
In the May issue of C/R, surprisingly the Pella 350 DH took the top spot by a wide margin among the 10 windows tested. The competition included Simonton, Anderson, Jeldwen, and lesser brands. The 3 tests performed were: 0 degree wind resistance, 70 degree wind resistance, and rain resistance. The pe...

Re: French door the cost of a new car??
pjs..I replaced my original builder grade french doors with Provia french doors about 6 years ago. The originals were steel, were airtight due to magnetic weatherstripping and lasted 25 years with 2 easy paint jobs. The provia doors are holding up well but I had some installation quality issues init...

Re: softlite ls air leaks
thanks for the replies..dealer said he would contact softlite but as he didn't think they would cover a weatherstripping issue...never heard back..the other issue is that I hired a local window installer, not softlite certified or dealer employee, so that's on me.. sashes operate smoothly, don't see...

softlite ls air leaks
Hello...I had softlite ls double hung windows installed several years ago. The only issue I've noticed is a slight but noticeable cold air infiltration along the side rail area where the top and bottom sashes meet. Authorized dealer has not been helpful. Any do it yourself ideas appreciated..thanks..

Re: Caulking
I've had pretty good results applying caulk over various surfaces with lightweight disposable latex or rubber gloves and a little finger pressure..might need a few depending on the job size as they tend to rip after a while..

Well, I finally had my soft-lite imperial ls window inserts installed..thanks to all the experts on this site for the recommendations..I'm happy with the windows, however the installation, although ok, could have been a bit better.. some areas, in the narrow gap between the insert and frame I could ...

Re: DAP Sidewinder window sealant
The only caulk we use on the exterior is OSI Quad. thanks..regarding osi quad, I noticed that the original formulation, not the quad VOC, is getting more difficult to find..some of the performance specs for the new low voc quad are worse than the original, i.e. shrinkage is higher at 36% vs 14%, el...
