Re: Seeking Recommendations

I agree with all of the above that getting a fiberglass or wood window with SDL for $500 or less might be difficult unless it's a 2' x 3' sample-sized window. As for the lifetime warranty issue, the only wood window that immediately comes to mind that ever offered a "lifetime warranty" was...

Re: Can the exterior Color of Pella Pro-Line cladding be changed

Vintris, to answer your question, yes you can paint over the aluminum cladding, but as has been already mentioned, you can actually order it in a custom color. Pella Proline Series is only available in 8 colors; their Architect Series and Designer Series are available in 27 colors plus custom colors...

Re: can SDL cost as much as $50 extra per window?

I do a lot of SDL windows. Generally removable grilles or grilles between-glass are about $3-$5/lite depending on the brand, and SDL's with spacers are about $20-$25/lite. If one had a double hung with 6 lites in the bottom sash and 6 lites in the top sash, that amounts to about $48 extra for remova...

Re: SIGNIFICANCE OF RELACEMENT WINDOW RATINGS

VLT ratings are irrelevant as far as the tax credit is concerned. It's a matter of personal preference as to what level of visible light preference one considers "important." Here's some stats for double glazing (center of glass, can vary slightly by various brands): clear glass 81% VLT on...

Re: Hurd Energy Saver vs Jeld Wen Pozzi

Thanks WoW, nice to be back. Been a busy boy. PRivera between the seven you've gotten bids from so far, all of which are fairly reputable (with the possible exception of the bankrupcy thing in the past with Hurd), I would be hesitant to suggest an 8th or 9th brand to consider. You already have looke...

Re: REPLACEMENT WINDOW AND SCREENING COMPARISONS

I'm guessing that Trimline is offered only in certain regions since I've never heard of them (I've been handling windows for over 30 years). I had to look them up online. If that is indeed the case it may explain why you haven't found many comments on Trimline. I'm more than familiar with Pella Arch...

Re: Were these installed correctly?

Pondscum and I are saying essentially the same thing. On older homes there's an interior and exterior stop, along with a stop between them called the "parting stop" or "parting bead." However, looking at the pictures, you had windows that had metal tracks without a parting stop, ...

Re: Were these installed correctly?

Bad install job. I can see how it happened. Some wood windows have a removable interior stop. To install, one can remove the interior stops, take out the windows and the tracks/balances/pulleys/ropes.etc., install the new windows, and replace the interior stops. However, many windows especially from...

Re: Hurd Energy Saver vs Jeld Wen Pozzi

Hurd does have a better warranty... Pozzi is Jeld-Wen's better line of windows; Hurd is (in my opinion) OK but not as good as Pozzi, but you bring up an interesting point with the warranty. A warranty is only good if the company honors it. Just this past December 2008 Hurd went through bankrupcy an...

Re: wenco windows

Wenco is (or was) what is now known as Jeld-Wen windows. Jeld-Wen has many sub-brands; since I haven't seen Wenco in years I'm not sure if they still make the Wenco sub-brand anymore. Anyway, you could contact them for more info. To more directly answer your question, yes you can buy better double h...

...ONLY THE MATERIALS qualify for the rebate, not the installation costs. I can't see to find any definitive answer on this. Does anyone know where to find one? At Energy Star's website it states "30 percent of the product cost." http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=windows_doors.pr_taxc...

Re: What Company Made My Windows?

Sometimes the manufacturer's name or an abbreviation of the name is visible on the glass, on the hardware, on the edge of the screen, on etched on the metal spacer between the glass. Is it a wood , metal, or vinyl window?

Re: Vinyl or Fibrex windows

You may not have been aware of this, but there are certain window manufacturers out there (that will remain unnamed) that have communicated to their sales force that they should not participate in online window-related discussions. That is probably why it is rare to encounter someone from these comp...

Re: Black Window Frames

Over the years I've done about 10 homes with black windows. They have always been wood interior with a black aluminum clad exterior. Even with aluminum, it will fade somewhat over time, but not as bad as it would with vinyl. Although I haven't done any fiberglass windows in black, that would be a pe...
