Re: Window Replacement and I Need Your Help

The U value is on the high side for a triple pane and should have argon instead of air.A U value of 0.30 is easily achieved by most dual glazed windows. Most of the other features are typical for a vinyl window. I would ask what the DP and air infiltration numbers are.

Re: Window Replacement and I Need Your Help

I have not seen Simonton specify what material is used in there sash reinforcement nor have I seen an option on steel vs aluminum. Sash reinforcement probally not needed till larger sizes.I would say the 5500 is a pretty good window and better than okay, just not top tier. They can look bulky in small...

Re: VPI vinyl eplacement windows vs Milgard Tuscany

44x60 is a typical sized test window. If I look at Gerkin's Test results for a 44x60 the AI# is 0.08 and for a 48x72 the AI# is 0.03 for the same 4800series double-hung window.Iwould agree that a single-hung in theory would have a lower AI# if built to the same standards as a double-hung. I would co...

Re: VPI vinyl eplacement windows vs Milgard Tuscany

The air infiltration numbers on single-hungs are higher sometimes because they are a budget window, maybe check out their upper-end double-hungs.

The question was answered correctly and professionally. $40 for capping is below cost for me, so if he does a good work I would not pass it up.

Re: Lead paint in brick mould and sill

Replies made after 1 am can be subject to delirium. Assumptions of lead poisoning were made from The OP replies. The casings are not usually chewed on but it is common to see the interior window stool chewed on and there is also hand to mouth contact. The main benefit of sealing the casings/stools i...

Re: Lead paint in brick mould and sill

I would agree with HS, inserts would be the way to go. It can be expensive to match the casing and stain on old windows and usually does not look as good.Make sure they foam or caulk the window to the jamb as this helps keep the lead sealed in and performs better than fiberlass. Were the windows dete...

Re: Lead paint in brick mould and sill

A full frame would be a permanent solution with no future monitoring required. Inserts are safe but would require future monitoring of caulk joints, though this should be done anyways. RRP rules would have to be engaged if remodeling or replacing disturbing windows in future as well. Installing inse...

Re: Typical installation-only cost?

Are they puttting in the window with factory brickmold, extension jambs applied and a ranch fingerjointed casing or no x-jambs, their own brick and metal and African mahogany casing with backband, stool and apron? What size are the windows? Are they all at ground level? What year was the house built...

Re: Looking for Vinyl Double Horizontal Sliders with Nigh Latch

I thought most do not come with latches. The Soft-Lite's that I installed last week did not have them nor did the last Simonton windows.Maybe they have to ordered?

Re: Window Recommendations for Northern Arizona

Eagle has there architectural and performance data clearly shown on there web page and is pretty easy to navigate. Both seem to be well built to me. The only thing I don't like about the Eagle is the internal glazing bead. It does make glass replacement possible but does not look as traditional to me...

The Eagle is pretty nice and usually below the Marvin Ultimate in price. How would the Marvin beat it out by a large margin?

Re: Rental Replacement windows

There are better options but if you do use them stick with there 9500 series 8500 series at a minimum. The 1200 series is very bad. The 9500 series has a 0.80 wall thickness which far from the thinnest out there.I have one in my house and its been there for over 5 years, it does not leak air nor hav...

Re: Factory painted vinyl

Paint can be an epoxy product. What kind of epoxy product is it? Epoxies are typically used because of resistance to chemicals, abrasion and heat and are known for fading and chalking. I believe most vinyl window paint are polyurethane based.

Re: Pocket replacement in vinyl window

I thought you said your window opened to 22'' and needed to go to 24'' =2''? Some manufactures have an externally and internally applied 11/8 grid that you can have applied to your casement window so it will look like a double hung window. Simonton sells 1'' flat adhesive trim that could be apllied ...
