Re: My Window Reviews for Massachusetts

It is too bad that you could not have included Okna in that run down. I think it gives the Restorations a run for its money. I like the Sunrise window a lot too.

Re: Alside Excalibur

Pocket sill design with a bulky look to it. Depending on the price range that window is in, there are much more favorable options.

What is the climate like in the area that you live?

Re: Marvin Infinity (fiberglass) vs BF Rich (vinyl)

Adrian...you must be some sort of engineer. That being said, the window manufacturers have gotten this pretty figured out at this point. As I mentioned previously, it is an over hyped fear and does not present any problems in well built windows. Silicone or glazing tape can certain accommodate a nic...

Re: Marvin Infinity (fiberglass) vs BF Rich (vinyl)

The seal between the glass and the frame can't be "independent of the frame". If this seal isn't good then air will leak in. A gap the thickness of a nickel would be catastrophic. (Temperature range in my area is only about 90 degrees, not 100, but close...) No grids for us. I checked a f...

Re: Marvin Infinity (fiberglass) vs BF Rich (vinyl)

Vinyl windows are based on UPVC (un-plasticized) frames and therefore do not have the same issues with out gassing as associated with other flexible vinyl products. The off gassing of flexible vinyl products is an overblown fear and my research indicates that it is a temporary problem that is mitiga...

Re: Marvin Infinity (fiberglass) vs BF Rich (vinyl)

Out-Gassing of vinyl is BS. Vinyl is just as stable a substrate as fiberglass and I would eliminate that from consideration when making a decision. On the other end of things, the BF Rich window is dark in my opinion for that Thermal data that they have. There are better vinyl windows out there that...

While I know the history on WinCore...they still have quite a bit to go before they are going to get people to switch brands.

Re: Marvin Windows Sash Rot

unpainted wood on the lower rail is a recipe for disaster. That is nothing that would really be considered Marvins fault unless they were specified to be painted.

Re: Structural performance: Simonton, Gorell, Soft-Lite

Everything makes a difference and between 0.02 to 0.15 is pretty stark.

Just depends on what the difference is worth to you.

DP and air infiltration are independent of each other.

Can't really disagree with Zago.

Test of time and Alside are not typically in the same sentence if you survey the pros.

Re: Coil Spring vs. Block and Tackle

Both good.

Block and Tackle is a tiny bit smoother in my opinion when the windows get larger. The teflon coated constant force systems are nice and as smooth.

Both will live plenty long.

Stop eating fast food then Dave.

The whole neat truck thing might be a trick. I have pulled my hair out trying to get my installers organized and neat looking but I wouldn't trade his work for anyone else.

Performance numbers are equivalent.

The Impressions 9800, is designed to look more like a wood window.
