Re: Vinyl windows in an alpine setting

We are currently completing the architecture of a 6500 sq ft home in the mountains of Utah near where the 2002 Winter Olympics downhill competitions were held. We are interested in the low maintenance characteristics of vinyl frames with low-e, low SHGC, and inert-gas-filled glass to reduce the los...

Board Consensus on Top 5 in each category

I would like to see what the board/professionals think that the top 5, doesn't have to be in any particular order, are in each respective category. I will throw out a couple in each that I think should be in consideration. Vinyl -Shuco -Soft-Lite Wood -Loewen -Marvin Fiberglass/Composite -Marvin Alu...

That may be difficult. Window4U typically has pretty good references as far as replacement hardware companies go but you may be out of luck on this one. I am sure you could take a gear assembly to a fabricator and they could duplicate the mechanism but at what cost. It would probably wind up costing...

Re: Window World Vs. Window Depot

I am looking to replace the windows in my home. I have received two quotes, one from window world and one from window depot. The window world quote ($5800) and the window depot quote ($5200) was for 10 double hung windows and 6 sliders. Window depot said that their manufacturer was republic but win...

Re: need new windows, have little money & don't know who

See Responses in Bold. I will chime in on what I think but wait to get more board input. Also, relax...your windows aren't going anywhere now so you can take time to educate yourself and make a decision on your timeline. I want to get replacement windows in right away. The best I can get for the mon...

Argon is not a waste of money at that elevation or climate. Argon is especially beneficial in areas where the winter is significant. If you have a quote on Marvins that is that close to Alsides...go with the Marvins. Most manufacturers do not argon fill because they will pop glass packs with they ge...

Didn't even read the measurements and see the doubles. That makes your price much more in line with pricing in this area.

Re: Am I paying too much?? Can I do better (window/price)

That quote seems a bit high for Alside Casements. Your area may be different but that is high for my region.

Also, the Casements are not Excaliburs...they are actually a different extrusion.

While I don't want to encourage home owners to envoke the BBB card until they have dutifully pursued options with the contractor, it sounds like your rep had a bit of a chip on his shoulder and if the owner is no more accomodating he may force your hand.

Grab the serial number from the unit and call Alside about the details on the window. As mentionned, I would check for air/sound leaks and look into reordering those sashes with at minimum double strength glass and Low-e argon.

Laminated glass is one more option to consider for sound abatement.

Thansks! Well i'm not sure about the glass package but it's Argon and we asked for a glass tint that would allow as much sun light in as possible as we're totally surrounded by trees in Fairfax Virginia. And yes for about the same price we saw where we could get what looked like a very strongly bui...

WoW you missed his 8/0tdl (true divided lite)$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ that's about $400.00 alone plus the painting or about right for a Pella replacement. For fun I looked up a comfortline with custom paint and 8/0 tdl's with low-e and argon and it came to over $1300. I did miss that. I guess I am just suff...

You could go with a good composite or fiberglass window for less and a top of the line vinyl would be more efficient and about half the cost.

Are the grids Simulated Divided lites?
