Based on the info you provided, there's no reason to replace the wood if you plan on installing a vinyl window as long as the installer seals the trim coil adequately. You didn't mention which model Pella window or the non-vinyl window you were looking at. It may or may not be that those windows wou...

I meant "gotcha" as in "I understand" I am here to give my opinions based on my experiences. My experiences with Vytex span over almost 9 years, not a couple of bad dealings with them, so I consider them valid and something someone considering windows should be informed about. Ob...

Gotcha, but the OP stated he was quoted those numbers for double pane with argon. The best rating Vytex has on any configuration at NFRC is .30 with 2 low e coats and I presume foam filled sashes. Everything else on Vytex at NFRC is between .31 and .35

Vytex question: If anybody out there is familiar with Vytex. The Vytex rep told me that Vytex (U-value 0.26) is better then Simonton 5500. How true is it? We've replaced 5 windows 2 years ago with Vytex Heritage series and have no complains so far, but then it cost only $2700. A big difference with...

That's still an absurd price IMO.

I agree with Bill. Look on the Simonton website for a local contractor. Check out the 9800 with triple pane if triple pane is what you have decided suits your needs.

This debate reminds me of one I heard about whether 6ft of insulation in ones attic is better than 3ft. Nobody is going to say 3ft is better than 6ft. But does anyone really care? At what point is something good enough to to do the job? Am I better off running 93 octane in my car if performs well at...

Those prices are absurd, assuming they are for double pane IMO. The Sears window is made by Simonton. I'd call a few companies in your area and see if they carry Simonton if you really liked the window. I don't have any experience with the Newpro, but if you give some more info such as U values etc....

Installation is the most critical component to consider, when replacing your windows. Bad installation can ruin the best window. I disagree. I think window quality is very important. Window installation isn't rocket science and most companies employ good installers. Sure there's always the exceptio...

Thanks :)
You need to specify whether you live in MD., D.C. OR VA. as many contractors aren't licenced in all 3 jurisdictions.

The Pella is new construction grade .063 mil thick vinyl. Compare to Simonton Reflections .072. One problem with thin, new construction grade vinyl windows is they can develop air leaks with age due to greater expansion and contraction of the vinyl. Read the comments on any Consumer Reports test res...
