Re: L shaped pice mounted to window sill during install

Todd I sense you think the way I do things is wrong! I'm sorry you feel this way! When I used the word "WE" I never meant for you to be insulted. Here's where I'm coming from Todd. I was installing windows and doors before most of the Pros here were even born or very young at the time. I w...

Re: L shaped pice mounted to window sill during install

I learned to never order any sill or head expanders with my windows long ago. None of these items have ever met my expectations. Up here in the Northland we love to cap all our windows with aluminum. We take great pride in our bending skills to enhance all our windows. We put the little custom bends...

Re: High Altitude Windows??

Producible, This is a very real issue at the higher elevation. I'm a bit set back on the price though. The only thing they do differently is add a 12" breather tube. If you think of your ears popping then you'll know your Eustachian tubes relieve that pressure. This is the same thing for the gl...

Re: Replacement Sliding Screen Door

I know when we were installing for Ryland back in the day they were using Capitol Windows and Doors. At that time they had a National contract with them. I would search out Capitol. Good Luck!!!

Re: Pella 350

WindowNerd it's nice to know I'm not the only one getting rolled by those we should never have to worry about. Fortunately they roll so many sales reps through their factories that we always have a new face. The National Rep that I had here for years who took care of our local Lowes Stores was one h...

Re: replacing exterior blind stop

Just my little two cents here. We cut our blind stops off with vibrating saw like a Multimaster. This gives us a nice clean cut that we can nail a new stop in place. You must make sure you screw down the existing brickmould or frame parts together tightly. Otherwise the loose wood will just vibrate ...

Re: 86 x 42 storm window question..

I used to travel all over. I still go down and golf in a Pella sponsored golf outing. I pretty much pick my jobs and work part time. I've beat this pour body to a pulp. I pretty much go out and terrorize bad installers and help consumers in court defending their honor. I love trying to figure out wh...

Re: Pella 350

Mike that's nice to hear. Unfortunately the upper Midwest location here in MN is loaded with self centered arrogant staff. I put together Pella's entire installation program for free. Thought I was going to make out well after a huge presentation of new installation guidelines for every product. The...

Re: Pella 350

I'm sure I've installed more Pella products than anyone else here. Maybe more than everyone put together. Pella came out with the 350 series to accommodate the builder and Lowes. Lowes buys more Pella than most anyone. Pella's old vinyl unit was horrible. We wood have to go back multiple times to mo...

Re: 86 x 42 storm window question..

Rebar I applaud your enthusiasm on educating yourself on this project. You need to understand that we all install our windows according to our climate. I live in MN which IMHO has the strongest codes and guidelines any installer has to face. We go from 50 below in the Winter to 110 above in our Summ...

Re: 86 x 42 storm window question..

The Lindsay window is made here in MN. I use it for full frame replacements religiously!! The fixed brickmould has a snap on cover to conceal mounting screws. I have had great luck with these windows for years. As for your concerns on vinyl it will last longer than you will if installed properly. I ...

Re: Replacing pre-existing vinyl windows....install questions

Ive done it numerous times. In most cases i was trying to find a leak. But I've also done it to prove the window is installed properly. Its always done me well. I've always been very confident in my installations. Sometimes its the only way to find the problem. Its common in my circle. Sorry guys!!

Re: Should I wait to trim my windows?

Totally agree with those above. Do your replacements at the same time your windows are installed. This way you get a better result. I'd hate to see you doing it twice. Good Luck!!!

Re: Drafts Again

This is usually a sign of stuff in insulation. If the window is properly shimmed, screwed, and foamed it should never move. Low expansion foam will act as an adhesive and insulation barrier in all areas its applied. The one thing I always see is the lack of shimming. I can see the warmer climate are...

Re: Replacing pre-existing vinyl windows....install questions

You do have the traditional drywall return on some windows. The others that have the stained wood look like preassembled Jamb Boxes. Easy to remove by taking a nail set and punching the nails in. You can usually see the puttied holes in the casing. A thin 3/32" or 1/8" roll pin punch can d...
