Re: Importance of Foam Insulation

With all the legal issues we see in our industry I'm amazed at the amount of Installers still using a stuffed in insulation. It's a proven fact it doesn't stop air infiltration and it lets water pass into the cavity and home. Insulation foam is a no brainier here in the Midwest. The foam application...

Re: Can you tell me if my installers are cutting corners?

Sorry I disappeared for some time. Had an unexpected death in the family requiring my full attention. I've talked with Andrea and I'm working with her to get these done properly. I went out and took a look at this installation a couple weeks ago. Yes it's true, this is one of the worst installs I've...

After reading all this I can't wait to see it. I've gone to the dance floor many times over these issues. Sounds like CRI but I'm not sure. I've been beating on people in the Twin Cities for 35 plus years. I'll fill you all in after meet with her! I love my job!!

Re: Can you tell me if my installers are cutting corners?

Sorry I didn't get back here sooner. Been to the Dr and found out I need my knees replaced. I've beat this body bad. Plus these two legs have held this Empire up for a long time. Lobster call me anytime. I'm in the Northern Suburbs. I'd love to come out and take a peek. 612-916-2257. Just leave a me...

Re: patio door slider hits framing of stationary door.

I know the Pella products like the back of my hand. I will bet it's the vinyl door! This is a very common issue with their door. I've fixed this issue more times than I'll admit. The entire unit has to be Plumb, Square and most importantly vertically leveled. The top of the unit is slanted away towa...

Re: Can you tell me if my installers are cutting corners?

I wouldn't accept that no matter what they said. That is totally unacceptable in my eyes anywhere. They've taken a clad window and cut the mull bars out of the cladding. Leaving those holes where the mulls were is a total hack job. The only way to replace these type of windows is by pulling the exis...

Re: Air Infiltration in Pella Replacements

Pella has been battling that forever. The largest leakage spot is at each fastner location. In most cases there should be four on each side. Just tilt the sash in and look up each channel. You should see the mounting holes very easily. After each fastener is tightened the installer is suppose to ins...

Good old Pledge furniture wax also works well. Spray it on a rag and rub down all the weather seals, inside and out. Just be patient.

Re: Andersen Windows Air Leakage number

Andersen has always done this. I'm only 20 minutes from their plant. I've driven there to get information. They still won't give me a straight answer. I know they've had issues with their manufacturing plants. But who knows. I stay far away from them unless I'm servicing their failures. Their servic...

Re: Recently installed replacement windows

Yes you can test for gas in the glass. There's a hand held tool called a Gas Glass that you put up to the glass and pull the trigger. It will tell you if there's any gas inside most home inspectors carry them. We also need to know what area of the US you live in to determine the problem. If your win...

Re: New Construction Window Issues

Ok guys, not one of you questioned the installer blaming it on a non cured glazing product. Come on guys I haven't been away from things that long! If you've been to any plant you know that the glazing products set up within 12 hours. Some faster than that. Even the worst window on the market can be...

Re: Sash Kit Questions

I've had luck with the Tilt-Pac and I've had my share of headaches. They are a very interesting application. Living and working in MN makes things easier for me to deal with Marvin Products. If I don't like it I go to their plant and educate myself. No matter what way you go it all comes down to the...

Re: Sealant/Caulking Showing

I don't know of many installers who use clear silicone anymore. Most complain its to difficult to work with. It also won't hold any paint if touch up is required. I'll only use it in areas I need invisible sight lines as stated above. I love the silicone because its all we had back in the old day. W...
