Re: Replacement windows as new installs

A wood window with a wood exterior normally has a brickmould exterior trim that you nail through to install the window. That brickmould is 1-1/4" thick. A wood window with a clad exterior and a nailing fin has the fin about 1-1/4" set back from the exterior. In both cases, any siding has a...

Re: Replacement windows as new installs

Sorry, I can't even picture how these would fit into your existing openings. If I had vinyl windows with a flange flush to the outside of the window (which I think is what you're describing), I'd either donate them or maybe try to sell them on Craig's List, hoping someone could use them in a playhou...

Re: Replacement windows as new installs

Vinyl replacements typically do not have any flanges. They are intended to go into existing window frames without a flange because they go between the stops of the existing windows. Are you sure they're replacements? Also, I can't quite picture what you mean by "inset."

Re: Victorian home replacement windows

It's hard to answer your question. The info you're giving is somewhat conflicting. First of all St James windows are not wood, so that's a bit confusing. You mentioned they don't need to look like the originals, but they need to be wood interiors with reusing stained glass. That rules out almost eve...

Re: Exterior color - I need brown!

Fiberglass windows are available in brown and would make a great selection! Wood windows with an aluminum clad exterior are also available in brown. Vinyl windows with a brown exterior would be more susceptible to vinyl profile heat distortion.

Re: Bye Bye Krypton Superwindows

It will be interesting to see what steps the window industry takes to achieve the new EnergyStar ratings, when U values will need to be as low as .27 (in 2009) and .17 (in 2013). I had envisioned at least triple glazed with warm edge spacers with krypton gas, but it's becoming apparent that perhaps ...

Re: purchase marvin infinity windows

Marvin wants to insure that the windows are installed correctly. So many window problems are related to poor installation. That is why the Infinity line is only sold through qualified installing dealers. Since they are not competing against other Infinity dealers (one dealer per territory) they can ...

Re: HELP!

I'm in the 2nd guy's camp, sortof. There are two main ways to order the replacement windows: to fit the sash opening (existing wood window frame) without installation fins, and to fit the stud-to-stud rough opening with installation fins. If ordered that way, the fins are normally integral to the vi...

Re: Storm Window installation

Bob, I should clarify what I stated before. I mentioned "$50 per window is possible." However, I should also state that $50 per window is unlikely in many areas. That's maybe what a non-licensed handyman may charge, or a subcontractor perhaps that is slow. Like W4U stated, in my neck of th...

Re: Storm Window installation

$50 per window is possible if you're doing part of the work, i.e. pulling off the old aluminum trim and installing the new storm yourself. All they would have to do is the new wrap. However if they're doing all three (off with the old wrap, on with the new including labor for storm window installati...

Re: leaking dormer window

It's going to be pretty hard for anyone to answer that question. I can't even picture what you are describing. The leak might not be from the window at all; it might be from how the dormer is attached/flashed to the home. However, if it is from the window (I not sure what "four pieces" is ...

Re: Replacement windows

IMHO (In my humble opinion), they're OK: not the best, not the worst. I have a lot of respect for the company, Andersen, and I like the fact that they (supposedly) control who installs their product so that they don't have many installation issues. Overall I'd rate them as average to above average, ...

Re: Vinyl or Fibrex windows

I agree with w.o.w. Evidently the salesperson you dealt with feels she has to slam her competition with untruths in order to justify the Renewal by Andersen product. Interestingly, most of Andersen's (not their Renewal line) products are vinyl clad (their main line) and all-vinyl (their Silverline p...
