if its heat mirror then its a film. if its lowE then its a coating(basically various layers of silver)embedded into the glass which is certianly not a film. some lowE's are very tinty such as solarban 70 and to a certain extent lowE 366.
serious windows use heat mirror which i am not a big fan of.

Re: Okna 400 or 500?
for $20 more i would look at the 500,thats a good deal for an upgrade to a 500.500 has a nicer sill with a mortised sill wall and more ergonomic tilt latches. better air leakage number as well.

Re: Help me learn so I can choose wisely
careful though. i know plenty of lower end window companies that have dp ratings of 35 who load up their sash with aluminum. thats not a great indication in my view. look for those numbers without any reinforcement, that would be a better way to measure peformance.

Re: Alside Excalibur
Alside excalibur is a lower quality window and i could never recommend that window. Ultramaxx is bulky with a high air leakage rate and a pocket sill which is a very bad design. expand your search unless you want to install winows again in a few years.

Re: Help me learn so I can choose wisely
the only one i would consider would be the simonton. try to get superspacer with extra strength glass. the others expecilly excalibur and alliance are junk.

Re: Replacement windows Gorell Timeless or Stanek
could be kevlar or pvc reinforcement. keep in mind a pocket sill will help render a higher dp rating.

Re: Serious Windows
why in the world would Serious warranty labor? they make windows, they don't install.
there were problems with heat mirror, thats what keeps me away from that technology. supposedly alot has improved but i can not take that risk. perfectly happy with soft coat lowE.

Re: seaway v. Park avenue
no,but i talked to them about a year ago and they mentioned they now use a sloped sill. they use super spacer on their triple but intercept on their double pane. they seem to really push their dealers into selling triple.

Re: seaway v. Park avenue
"Park Avenue windows feature Sloped Sills, which have a downward slope to the outside to aid in water runoff."
its not a pocket sill. Park Avenue is a nice window.

Re: American Jewel Review
agree on the brochure. American Jewel is not a window i would ever install; it is not a quality replcement window. the problem is'nt the glass, its the frame; flimsy and cheap in my opinion.
