Re: How's this quote?

Good price. You are not robbing them but that is probably a competitive price.

Re: Accepted first bid, should I back out?

You don't need to pay 1K per window to not worry about them for the duration of the home for that matter.

Re: Accepted first bid, should I back out?

I think you have answered your own question.

You probably don't feel good paying $1000+ per window and that shows in your post.

Re: Single hung vs double hung; who opens the top??

The benefit of a double hung is rarely because of the ability to ventilate from the top sash and more a result of being able to clean the top sash (via tilting in and cleaning). A single hung does not provide this flexibility. If you have a tall 2nd or 3rd story window, it does not feel to comfy han...

Re: Marvin Integrity Warranty only 10 years?

I think that is purely a result of a carry over of the wood warranty. There is zero reason that the Ultrex fiberglass should not last 2 lifetimes for that matter. Look a boat hulls that are submerged in salt water for years. Very similar material and the window will never see that kind of abuse.

Re: How to get max glass on replacement windows??!!

To get an accurate measurement on your existing windows, measure from the jamb behind the interior trim stop. After that, you can accurately gauge how much glass you will loose. There are thinner profile windows but you will loose glass regardless. In some applications (depending on the window chose...

Take a look at fiberglass as well. JScott is in your backyard too. One of the best Infinity guys out there right now.

Re: is this a possibility with Gorell windows

I am not sure, however, very little of a windows performance (i.e. conductive losses) is really attributed to a spacer. Try to get the best spacer you can but I wouldn't change a buying decision because of that fact alone.

Re: Anyone tracking prices pre and post 30% tax credit???

In today's marketplace, if anything, prices have come down. I know of several companies that are operating at absolute bare bones margins in order to keep their installers employed.

Re: wood vs. vinyl - cost / performance

Couple of quick caveats...lets eliminate the cheaper vinyl windows (and cheap wood windows for that matter) and only deal in premium, recognized quality brands. That being said... Without a doubt...the wood will cost more and will not usually come close to the vinyl in terms of performance for that ...

Re: Do you need to cap exterior wood trim with metal???

Better in terms of aesthetics...yes (i.e. well maintained and painted wood looks better in my opinion). Better in terms of ease of maintenance...no. Capping or wrapping does not typically add to the windows installation substantially and most homeowners opt for it because it provides a nice finished...
