Re: Extension jamb over fiberglass

I always nail or screw my extension jambs together before installing them. It's much easier to get them lined up with the proper reveals that way, and it just makes for a more solid installation. I also nail my casing together at the corners with brads and put it up like a finished picture frame for...

Re: southside chicago home

Some of the better brands we recommend on here are Okna, HiMark, Starmark, Sunrise, and Softlite. All are available here in Chicago.

Re: buying windows

You could check local siding & roofing warehouses in your area that provide these products to the pros. They many times will have a line of windows that they will sell to DIYers. The windows they carry might not be top tier, but most are better than big box offerings.

Re: okna interior finish

All prices given to you are set by the dealer, not the manufacturer, so you need to ask your dealer pricing questions. Okna uses the Duralite spacer. It's a very good warm edge spacer, as good as they get.

Re: okna interior finish

The Okna & HiMark 800 lines have 3 color woodgrain laminates to choose from.(Pic 1) Okna's Starmark window line has a stainable finish available that can be stained to look exactly like the wood you are trying to match. (Pics 2&3) https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-QT3HEEDK_Oc/UdcEsNqKHPI/AA...

Re: Glass package discrepancy

If you can see the split down the middle of the spacer then it is triple pane, and if your u-factor says .25 then you have the wrong stickers. That's a new one for me. I've never seen Okna make a mistake on stickers before. Let your dealer sort it out for you. He'll be able to straighten it out for ...

Re: Hurricane protection from Simonton 9800 with impact glass?

I would suggest the Simonton Stormbreaker series instead of the 9800. I wonder why they are not suggesting this for you?

Re: 200+ unit apartment complex replacing windows- need help!

I would 100% spec low-e for the project. It won't be that much more and it does much more than just help with heating. It also helps in the summer for keeping the place cool, plus it provides UV protection which will protect your interior trim, curtains, floors and furniture. It will also help to ke...

To give you suggestions on brands it would be helpful to know the city the project is in.

thanks

Is this something the installer did, or are you talking about clear silicone squeezing out around the glass?

Re: Help me choose final 4 window companies in SE Wisconsin

I've replaced a lot of pocket sill windows with cracked sills where water was damaging the walls. What I figured out was that the water sitting in the pocket sill froze when it got cold and the expanding ice cracked the vinyl frame, allowing rainwater to leak into the walls for years. After what I'v...

Re: Help me choose final 4 window companies in SE Wisconsin

Don't most horizontal sliding windows (side to side) have a pocket they slide in? If a pocket is so bad for a double-hung, why do most manufacturers have is for they're side to side sliders? I think the main reason is that they don't have an alternative design to choose from. On double hungs there ...
