Re: Energy savings

Depends on the square footage of glass, climate where you live, and condition of the building envelope/insulation.

Re: Please review the replacement windows estimate I was quoted!

This question is very easy...that is too much money for any Alside window.

Buddy is correct in that they were misleading you from the start with their claims anyway. $80 for grids is too expensive as well.

Depends on the size, type of installation, and options that are being quoted in your project.

Re: Structural performance: Simonton, Gorell, Soft-Lite

Performance is performance.

Equal thermal performance between the two window, the one with the lower air leakage rate will be more efficient. It also speaks to the broader point of attention to detail and build quality.

Re: Structural performance: Simonton, Gorell, Soft-Lite

WoW cites .08 air infiltration for the Simonton 9800 double-hung in the other discussion board: soft-lite or simonton? Perhaps this was for a different window in the line. In my quote, I found the [AAMA?] report number--60504.02--which matches the Simonton structural data : 36 x 72 0.16 scfm/ft² 28...

Re: My Window Reviews for Massachusetts

It is too bad that you could not have included Okna in that run down. I think it gives the Restorations a run for its money. I like the Sunrise window a lot too.

Pocket sill design with a bulky look to it. Depending on the price range that window is in, there are much more favorable options.

What is the climate like in the area that you live?

Re: Marvin Infinity (fiberglass) vs BF Rich (vinyl)

Adrian...you must be some sort of engineer. That being said, the window manufacturers have gotten this pretty figured out at this point. As I mentioned previously, it is an over hyped fear and does not present any problems in well built windows. Silicone or glazing tape can certain accommodate a nic...

Re: Marvin Infinity (fiberglass) vs BF Rich (vinyl)

The seal between the glass and the frame can't be "independent of the frame". If this seal isn't good then air will leak in. A gap the thickness of a nickel would be catastrophic. (Temperature range in my area is only about 90 degrees, not 100, but close...) No grids for us. I checked a f...

Re: Marvin Infinity (fiberglass) vs BF Rich (vinyl)

Vinyl windows are based on UPVC (un-plasticized) frames and therefore do not have the same issues with out gassing as associated with other flexible vinyl products. The off gassing of flexible vinyl products is an overblown fear and my research indicates that it is a temporary problem that is mitiga...

Re: Marvin Infinity (fiberglass) vs BF Rich (vinyl)

Out-Gassing of vinyl is BS. Vinyl is just as stable a substrate as fiberglass and I would eliminate that from consideration when making a decision. On the other end of things, the BF Rich window is dark in my opinion for that Thermal data that they have. There are better vinyl windows out there that...
