window replacement chicago

#1 Post by c84375109 »

Happy New Year to everyone on this board.

I am in a suburb of Chicago and am looking to replace 12 windows or so. I have dryvit as the exterior material. I got a quote from Renewal by Anderson who wants to cut out the dryvit and have it replaced. I am concerned about how that would look and the replacement would add $8k to the price tag. Is there other ways to handle the dryvit situation?

In addition, the main reason I am replacing the window is to block out noise. Are there any specialty window designed for noise reduction purposes? I currently have wood windows and am debating whether to replace with wood or go with Fibrex.

Thanks all.

Good morning,
Not enough detail to help you on the install side. Need pictures and a better scope to advise.

Why use fiberx, it is wood pulp and vinyl, why not fiberglass or super vinyl?

+1. The install options are dependent on very specific circumstances. Generally speaking, RBA has limited, systemized installation types that they offer, so that may or may not be the best for your situation.

On the product, if you like the thought of composite windows, something like the Okna Starmark would offer much better performance than the RBA option or any American made fiberglass or wood window. If performance is not as important, something like the Marvin Elevate wood/ultrex is nice. That said, if you want to block out noise, I'd look for an airtight window (lowest air infiltration ratings) as well as consider glass packages designed to mitigate sound, such as laminated glass or offset glazing packages.

+1 on the discussion about air infiltration. If that isn't a part of the discussion, the people that you are talking to are neither the correct product or firm.

Any or yall using the okna/highmark 1000.
I like a 1 /38" glass for trple pane, what are your thoughts on noise reduction with that model compared to 800.

I like that IG thickness a lot for both energy and sound performance. I would like it even more if one of those lites happens to be a different thickness than the others, say 4/3/4 or 4/3/3 or even 3/2/3 or 4/2/4.

I agree and understand.
Getting Okna to do off set glazing is like trying to teachh a fish to fetch.

@Wayne, we've installed a fair number of 1000's. Shoot me an email if you have any questions.
