Large windows

#1 Post by Claudette »

We are building a house in Lorton. The back of the house is south facing and has a water view in the winter. We would like to have floor to ceiling windows, (and a glass sliding door) on as much of the mail level great room (10 foot ceilings) as possible. We aren't sure whether Anderson or Rehau (the German Company) or another company will give us the best value and quality. Any help would be appreciated.

Price them out and the answer will perhaps become clearer.

Lorton, VA?

Todd is right in that the only way to really "know" is to price them out. Some window companies are not as punitive on taller/large windows. Keep in mind that you might want to have an 18" stem wall height to avoid the tempered glass requirement.

Another way to get large windows cheaper is to use dead lite panels that are actually sliding glass door/patio door stock size. So approximately 3' x 6'8 or 4' x 6'8 or some will offer 8' tall units. If you have a builder who is good they can frame and install the panels as if they were a window.
Again looking for the right company to sale you these components my take a little work.
If you found someone really clever and flexible you can buy stock SGD glass and direct glaze with them. At that point you might look for an triple pane 1 3/8" thick.

If you are near Windows on Washington, Eric can take care of you. Tell him theWindowNerd sent you.

Do a price comparison for the toughened variant and it will give an idea of strenght vis-vis cost factor for both the brands.

The SGD panel or direct glazed will be the cheapest option per sq ft.
Many companies are now offering contemporary lines. I would look at Marvin as they are leading with large unit with combining fiberglass and aluminum framing.
If Eric can not hook you up, I probably can as a supply only.
