Advice on Replacement Window Quotes

#1 Post by Chantilly Clearview »

We would like to replace all 21 double hung windows on our 1980 colonial. By size, we have 8 windows that are 45"x35", 4 windows that are 61"x35", 4 windows that are 61x23, 2 windows that are 37"x23", 1 window that's 45"x43", 1 window that's 38"x35, and 1 window that's 37"x35". We want white, dual-pane, no-grid vinyl replacement windows.

Using Consumer Checkbook in the Washington, DC area, we identified three companies that received top marks for overall quality and price, with between 115 and 350 customer ratings each. All quotes were based on the window size information we provided and did not include a visit to our house.

The first company we visited sells only Ideal Platinum Series 3000 vinyl replacement windows. Their quote includes installation, removal/disposal of old units and wrapping the exterior wood with vinyl coated aluminum (capping). The total quote was $8,400. This company was the only one of the three that priced the replacement windows according to size. The 45"x35", 45"x43", and 61"x23" were priced at $400 per window. The 37"x23" and 38"x35" were priced at $380 per window. The 61"x35" were priced at $420 per unit.

The second company gave us quotes on four replacement windows. Their quote says they will custom build, furnish, and install the windows. That service includes all trim, caulking, sealing, insulating, cleanup haul away of debris, and aluminum wrapping of exterior wood. The quotes we received were:

Provia Endure = $14,028 ($668/window)
Provia Aspect = $$13,482 ($642/window)
Vytex Potomac-hp = $16,527 ($787/window)
Vytex Fortis = $14,553 ($693/window)

The third company gave us a quote for the Vytex Potomac-hp Includes all material, labor, taxes and disposal of the old windows. The quote was $14,148 ($674/window, including tax).

One thing that caught our attention and is causing us concern is that the sales reps from companies #2 and #3 both said they were no longer doing business with Ideal due to corporate issues and untrustworthiness. We are unable to find any negative information on Ideal ourselves. We would greatly appreciate your advice on the quotes we received and, importantly, any information you may have about whether the negative comments about Ideal are true/justified.

Thank you, Chantilly Clearview

Bid #3 looks to be the winner.
I am not familiar with Idea but those prices were to low 10 years ago.

The clown that is offering Ideal Platinum at that price sounds like a crack addict. Why would someone take on a job to lose money.
Im guessing he works out of his garage and doesnt know basic math.

If you're close to, and they service your area, I highly suggest reaching out to Windows on Washington. You would be in the best of hands with them.

has to be a window only price, otherwise that guy is going to take your money and you will never see him again
