Okna 500/600/800 + Elegante

#1 Post by grlmopz »

Hello,

We have just received a quote for 12 replacement windows. Three are 38" x 41", while the other nine are 44" x 61".

Installed price is $9400 for the Okna 500 deluxe package, which seemed OK to us.
We also got a quote for $2775 to get the Okna Elegante sliding door.

(I've been reading these forums a lot during the last week. Thanks to all who have helped us understand that the $8500 quote for Alside Fusion windows, while cheaper, was something to run away from!)

I asked about potential upgrades to the 600 and 800 and received the following responses.

600: "Exactly the same price as the 500. Most people don't opt for these because the numbers are worse."

It seems to me that the difference between a U-factor of 0.25 and 0.26 is negligible, right? Are the structural improvements enough to overcome the minor increase in U-factor? Can someone help me understand the extra benefit to interlocking sashes / sill and any other benefits / drawbacks? I'm pretty new at this.

800: "About $80 per window more expensive. I normally only sell these to people who are looking for a wood grain."

My gut feeling is that we should choose the 600s over the 500s, given that they're the same price. Is that the right choice? Trying to understand whether the 800s are $960 better than the 600s.

Thanks a lot!

Yeah...I am not sure that "worse" is the appropriate descriptor in that case or that the only rationale for the 800 is because of woodgrains.

If you are doing it once, the 800 does make for a nicer interior look with the metal hardware and it is their best window in the normal vinyl line-up.

The Okna 600 and 800 will both have structural reinforcement as well as a sill and header interlock. The 500 does not have any of those features.

1) That's some good pricing on Okna, particularly the door. Pretty low actually on that unit.

2) The 600 is a better window than the 500. The .01 in u value is pretty negligible but the structural advantage of the 600 is not. That slight drop is only due to the fact that foam is pulled out of the meeting rail in favor of composite reinforcement. The 600 does cost more than the 500, so if he's willing to give it to you for the same price for some crazy reason, that's an easy choice.

3) The 800 is a great window and with this pricing you'd get a fantastic deal on it. 9 times out of 10 I'd say that is the best choice here, although again, the option of getting the 600 at the 500 price may be too good to pass up. That window is much closer to the 800 than the 500 IMO.

Do the 800.
If you don't like the handles, get them with no handles. We have had several clients opt for no handles.

Thanks, all. Extremely helpful insights all around.

If we were to get the 800s without the handle (which we don't like, so thanks for alerting us to this option), would they instead include a lift rail? Or would you just open it using the top of the lower sash?

No lift rail. Just naked at that point.

No handles means no lifts.
The majority of people operate windows the same way: unlock, put there thumbs under the top rail and lift. To close they use the top or bottom rail, then lock.

not a fan of no sash lifts, but thats a personal preference I supposed. Hope you don't have long finger nails.
