Removing siding vs cutting it back

#1 Post by yville72 »

I'm looking to replace a few windows on a property that have new construction vinyl windows with siding/j channel surround. My question is, instead of removing the siding and reinstalling it, can I just cut back the existing siding roughly 3 1/2" inches around the window, remove the old nail fin window, prepare the opening, install new window with nail fin, tape, re apply J channel and install vinyl trim board? What would be the pros and cons of this?

We do this often, but we are also professionals. If you are very competent in window and siding installation, flashing, and overall water management concepts, then go for it. I wouldn't recommend it for the average DIY'er.

The new PVC/Azek trim boards will need a nail fin "relief" table saw cut on the back to allow for the thickness of the vinyl window's nailing flange. This will allow the new trim boards to lay flat/true on the sheathing for proper miter or box joints.

Thanks for the replies. I was looking at the Versatex Stealth with Flange Slot product. The stuff is awesome, just very expensive.
