gorell replacement

#1 Post by bayfeet »

We had a gorell picture window replaced under warranty. When the installers came with the new window they took the new glass out of the new frame, took the old glass out of the old frame, and installed the new glass in the old frame. They said it would be easier than replacing older frame and window as one one unit. It didn't make sense to me, appeared to take a lot of work, to separate the new window from the new frame, and the old window from the old frame and handle the glass outside of its frame. This is a big window (78" w x 48" h). Is this a common practice to replace an existing window this way. It seemed like a shame to ruin the integrity of a new window and frame. Thanks, bay

Assuming that the glass was being replaced due to seal failure, normally the glass unit would be sent without the mainframe of the window. They are shipped with some sort of cardboard, foam, or other material to protect the glass. Because of the size of your window the manufacturer may have felt is was best to ship it in the mainframe. While it may have not been the most efficient way to replace the glass, it seems to have been an acceptable way considering you did not mention that the glass was broken or damaged.

Picture window warranty glass is normally replaced glass-only.

+2. Nothing wrong with that at all. There is still a fair amount of labor, but it is less than having to redo the exterior trim. No compromise in quality at all. :)

That is the norm and will not negatively affect the window.

This is Gorell's and others practice. First off the glass weighed over 100 pounds. They use door sash material to protect the frame for shipment. It sounds like the crew did a good job.
