okna 400 with single color in and out pricing question.

#1 Post by chasingtime »

i have 22 windows in my house and was quoted $11,600 for the job. 9 are large sliders 8 are side picture windows 4 are bathroom double hungs and 1 vented basement block window. these will be single color in and out model 400 windows only with carpentry needed and outside wrapped. are they a good choice and does this price sound reasonable either way? thanks, tom

Yes and yes. :D
The 400 is Okna's entry level offering, but it boasts performance ratings that are still on the very high end among vinyl window choices. At a little over $525 ea, the pricing sounds good as well, particularly since there are larger sliders and some carpentry needed. More details would be needed to say for sure, but it sounds good given the info that you've provided. :)

Tom,
The pricing is definitely within the normal range. When they say carpentry, they probably mean some repair on the sill or casing.

is there any benefit to going up in grade? he liked the 400 because it had a better air filtration value than the next one up and he said he can insulate the all 21 400s for approx $400 if i didnt want the hollow 400s. he felt the hollow 400s were fine but said i cant go wrong either way. im in rochester ny by the way. thanks again, tom

I like an insulated frame for 2 reasons Tom.
1) the frame and sash is insulated
2) adds rigidity to the frame

does that mean it would be good to add it to the 21 400s for $400 or should i go up in model? also, im in rochester ny. does anyone have a suggestion for a great installer in this area?

If it is within your budget, the 500 dx would be my choice. The AI is .02 , and u value is .25. Those numbers are practically unbeatable when it comes to apples to apples comparison against ANY product ( double hung, double pane). It also has a design pressure rating of 50, without any sash reinforcement, which again is nearly unheard of. I actually have some 500 Dx's in my own home.
The 400 base is still a good window as I mentioned earlier, but if your are going white, the 500dx is the sweet spot of the lineup in terms of value. Just my $.02. :D

the okna web site says the 400 ai is .01 and the 500 ai is .09 and the u-values are very similar.

The recorded AI rate on the sliders is a bit better on the Okna 400. On the double hungs, the 500 is superior.

I do like the foam upgrade in the windows.

Who is supplying the glass block window?

I personally prefer the look of the 500 over the 400 but I can't fault your decision in either direction.

what about him filling the 400s with foam? $400 for all 21. this way i get the .01 ai and the insluation. best of both worlds or no?

I was referring to the double hung AI, as that is typically the "default" conversation. The 500 is just a better window to me at minimal extra cost.

they actually addressed its amazing ai rating and said it is not a typo because i asked how the least expensive has the best rating. they said its something to do with 400s unique slider design. i will contact okna and ask. thanks for the advice...

Great window choice.
Is the $400 up charge for "DX"?
