Installation started... is this right?

#1 Post by twc »

Installation started today and I'm mostly happy with what i saw when i came home from work.
One question - is the seam in the picture correct?
Is it something I should complain about?
Looks like saving a few bucks on materials and leaving an unattractive seam that will clog up with dirt and mold.
or am i being unreasonable and this is industry standard?

I think it should have been 1 piece, not normal for me.

Is that horizontal snip/cut on a standard white piece of vinyl j-channel, or is that part of the factory built-in j-channel face flange on the window?

I assume it's not factory built in, but i don' really know what I'm talking about.
It's not on every window.
Maybe these come in certain lengths and the choice was waste pieces her and there or make a seam?
Wife says he was bending coil in driveway, so maybe he makes these pieces?
I get this isn't affecting performance of the window.

I wasn't sure if this was common and will disappear after i quit staring at it... i need to relax
or
if this is okay, but not an install you'd be proud of/take a picture of... raise at walk through and see what they say
or
if i should expect them to do this right

Are they installing your siding? Or Just the window? That seam is on your J-Channel which is part of the siding, unless they are changing your j channel also it’s likely that was already there and you never noticed before because you weren’t looking. I’d ask them about it, and see what they say. It should be 1 piece. Also definitely don’t wait until the end to ask about your concerns, it’s much easier to fix any issues when the job is in progress than at the end imo

Nope they aren't replacing the siding.
So it's been "wrong" for 20 years and I never noticed.
Kind of funny, I appreciate the education.

So no problems with install other than where I keep sticking my fingers in wet caulk checking out the window.
I should probably stop doing that.
