Sliding window vs Single/Double Hung Impact Glass

#1 Post by Sebrox »

I am getting new impact glass windows.

I understand the ones that slide left/right vs open up/down like a normal window are cheaper. Is it cheaper because there are no balancers involved?

I'm not really sure of the pros/cons of either type. I just want to know which is sturdier and will last longer, have less problems.

We are looking at renting the home as a vacation rental. The house is two story btw.

Which way would you recommend and why?
Thanks!

Sliders are usually cheaper to make. Simpler frame, mechanism, etc.

I do like casements as a general rule. If you are coastal, flying debris is going to likely be the bigger failure point so as long as they are both impact rated, you should be fine.

Thanks. Any ballpark I should see in terms of price difference?
As in sliders are XX% on average cheaper than single hung?
Thanks

Wouldn't expect to see any difference in price in those type of operators.

As WoW explained, you won't see much difference between a slider and single hung when all else is equal... Very little difference if any between slider and double hung for that matter. That said, where savings can be had (often exponentially), is when you take twin SH or DH's and combine into one slider. In that case you are converting two window into one. Four IGU's down to two. That can add up very quickly and save hundreds or thousands depending on the size of the order... Keep in mind that there are some trade-off's with sliders (most don't tilt in for cleaning, leak a little more air, etc), but purely from a cost perspective they can make a big difference.

If you are renting the difference would matter little.
