minimum air infiltration/max r-factor

#1 Post by raggedyman »

in a new construction, if an exterior wall had 3 (or 4) windows, each 3' x 5', would a mulled multiple assembly be more energy efficient that 3 single windows separated by framing(with heavy insulation of course)?

would the difference be significant?

any other down side to using 'multiple assemblies', besides weight and difficulty of installation?

oh yeah, the wall in this instance will be non-load-bearing.

thx y'all...

A mulled assembly would be ever so slightly LESS energy efficient that 3 (or 4) separate windows. The difference is so minute that I would not let energy efficiency be any part of your decision.

There really is no other drawbacks to a mulled unit vs. separate windows. Your decision should really be based on what you want to accomplish with that particular wall - appearance, view, ventilation.
