Cutting out 20year old AL windows

#1 Post by tlillybridge »

I need to replace some Aluminum windows that have lost their seal on a wood-framed house with particle board sheet siding. My questions are: is it better/easier to cut the siding back far enough to pull the whole window out (including fins) or is it ok to run a saw along the edge of the outside frame to essentially remove the fins? If I cut the siding back I plan to use a circular saw about 1.5 inches from the window and then put a "picture" frame around the window when done to hide the cuts. If it is ok to cut along the edge and use a replacement style window or a window with fins removed, what type of saw/blade works for this? Also, is the replacement window (without fins) type installation as good? Thanks!
