Re: Measurement Question
Where are you located?
I find it hard to believe you can not find window and door foam locally.

Re: Measurement Question
I live in Norfolk, VA. I can get the straw foam, just not the stuff that you use in a gun. Every place that I went to or called said they could order it, they just didn't stock it.

Re: Measurement Question
Did your try any builder supply houses like ABC or Allied? Places that cater to professionals will typically stock it, unlike the big box stores.
Re: Measurement Question
I was all over those places. They all can order, but don't stock. I think it has something to do with expiration dates on the foam.

Re: Measurement Question
Fifty bucks for a gun you will use once come on
use the straw and regular foam in the pockets
start at the bottom put some in and allow to expand for 20 minutes then add another layer building up slowly
usually four layers gets it done
1/4" cut back is better if sill is level and jambs are plumb
just open up exterior brickmold and stop at bottom a little then nail it back tight after frame is in
use window foam in void between new frame and old jambs
pinch end of straw for smaller voids
put a small bead in its easier to add more than cleanup a mess
wrap and caulk exterior first or foam will be all over new window
clean off whoops with laquer thinner
wear gloves and hold straw as you guide it along.
protect carpets etc.
whoops should be left to dry first wet foam smears and makes bigger mess.
bravo on diy
that which is difficult is also beautiful good luck

Re: Measurement Question
So I have everything complete. I found it easier to use the spray foam you get from HD or Lowes for the bottom part of the pockets. It just came out way too fast to stick to the sides. The gun (picked up on ebay for $25) did very well in this regard because you can control the size of the bead which essentially controls the speed at which the foam is dispensed.
All in all I found it very easy to install the windows. I spent the vast majority of the time removing the old windows and sealing up the weight pockets. My measurements were spot on. So glad I went with the 3/8" cut back all around.
It is so nice to be able to open the windows with out the use of a pry bar, the noise level has dropped, and the drafts are non existent.
Thanks for everyone's assistance.
