How old is the paint or finish on the door? It is raised panel?

The best thing that I have used in the past was one of the small foam detail rollers. It applied the paint most evenly and left the fewest application lines.

I gree with what WOW said, prep is key. I prefer oil paints on doors, especially steel doors. You may want to thin the paint if rolling dpending on brand and viscosity.

1) Lay the door horizontally on a table
2) Remove any hardware parts like glass that you don't want painted
3) Lightly scuff the surface with sandpaper
4) Wipe the door with acetone to keep it clear of dust
5) Apply the paint with a 4" brush, always begin at the panels
6) When applying a second coat wait for ample time for the first coat to dry
7) Continue to apply top coat to all the six sides of the door.
