Replacing windows in solid brick house

#1 Post by jacobf »

I am working on replacing some windows in a 100-year-old, solid brick rowhouse in D.C., and I'm not sure what type of window to buy -- the original window frames are rotted, and I am replacing the wood. The frames were attached to 2x4s embedded into the brick wall with mortar. I'm replacing all that wood, but most new windows seem to come with "nailing fins" attached -- it seems like these wouldn't work in this situation. (Or would require taking up more of the window opening.)

Any ideas how best to do this? The windows I am removing are vinyl inserts that were screwed through the side jambs, and caulked around the outside.

Thank you!

Jacob,

Most of the nailing flanges in these cases (i.e. wood windows in a full, new construction variety) can either be ripped off (via utility blade) or actually fold back.

If you are going full tear out, plan on insulating the weight boxes, get your wall depths, pre-attached brickmould would be best, etc.
