Replacement entrance and screen doors

#1 Post by windowshopper »

What brands are good for doors?

One salesperson said buy a screen door ( Larson) at Home Depot (the only thing I should buy at Home Depot)it is cheaper than what they can buy screen doors for and very good quality. Would you agree with that?
What is a good steel entrance door to buy?

When it comes to door shopping your OK with the DIY stores. Therma-Tru is probably the best in our area. The only downfall is their door is a couple inches taller than standard. So you usually have to cut the opening taller. This is not fun in any way. Stanley and Jeldwyn are two others stocked around here in MN. Our local Menards has a line called Mastercraft made in WI. Any of these choices would be good. I tend to use the Stanley product for the upper end doors. When ordering your door make sure you know the wall thickness. New homes are 6 9/16" most the time. Older homes tend to differ in width. The standard door frame comes with a 4 9/16" jamb. If you have a larger size you will need to get a jamb extension kit. This is one of the biggest installation problems in the industry. Make sure you know how to install it correctly. You have to knock off the brickmold and nail it in place. Then the brickmold is re-applied. Make sure the new door comes with a deadbolt prep and adjustable sill. These will make things much easier at installation.
Larson storm doors are fine. Pick out your style and go with it. Two things to remember here. Do you want self storing glass and screen or interchangeable? When you have to take the screen and glass out to change it can be a pain. Self storing seems a bit more convenient. Otherwise Andersen and Emco are also two other brands to use. Hope this helps
