Are my spacers bad?

#1 Post by JeffL »

A friend is having some work done on her house. The contractor noticed that the spacers between the panes of her windows were wavy, and told her they shouldn't be like that.
We checked our windows, which were installed 9 1/2 years, and all the spacers are wavy. For all I know, they could have been like that since day 1.
Is this really a problem?

Pics will help but that is a pretty common spacer failure and look.

If they are 9.5 years old, tell her to check the warranty out ASAP as she may only have 10 years on them.

Swiggle Seal had a big issue with waviness, particularly in smaller sized glass units.

Our friend had the windows installed after ours, and told us that Anlin is replacing them. I have not personally seen them.
Our windows will be 10 years old in September, so if this is a problem, we'll want to do something soon.

This is pretty much how all our spacers look:

That does not appear to be a failure. The "ribbing" that you see is simply the outer foam and seal contoured to the shape of the polycarbonate core of the product. When they go bad, you will see major dips and waving, like the whole spacer rising up into the glass area.

Ding, ding.

This is what a typical seal failure looks like.

Seriously. If that happened in one day, you would probably jump back when you went in the basement.
