Installing a new bathroom window on outside wall

#1 Post by geno2552 »

HI, I would like to install a new bathroom wall window where no window is. The window will need to be small about 16" wide and 29 or 30 " tall. I have 16 inch studs but the place the window needs to go has a king stud right through the middle of the new window. So of course there is no king stud for another 8" or so on each side of the window. Is there a way to rectify this problem without tearing the drywall out? It's a texture that would be difficult to duplicate for a novice and too small of a job for a professional. Any ideas?

Don't see a good way if this is a king stud. Why would another king stud be another 8'' away, typically they are 16'' or greater apart. Having a hard time envisioning this.

Is it a bearing wall?
What is the exterior siding/finish.
If it is non bearing you can lay out and cut your inside/drywall opening.
If there is a stud in the opening then measure down 1.5" and 1.5" up past the new drywall opening, either plunge cut the stud with a sawzall or work inside the wall with a multi cut tool, remove that piece of stud, cut 2x4 ( or 2x6) to go from to the king studs on either side of the stud you cut, fit them inside the cavity, level them and attach, these will be horizontal.
Then add 2 x verticals between the horizontals you just installed attaching them to the new horizotals, add back the proper width of insulation first. Now you have a new RO for the new window. Drill a hole from the inside to the outside in each corner. Connect the dots, cut out the exterior, install the new window with what ever flashing detail that you like.
