Hi, we're mid-70 couple on very limited budget. We'd like to replace a cracked picture window approx 80"h x 66"w with 2 double-Hung vinyl windows in an opening approx 48 " h x 52-56" wide, using the existing header.
I assume I need to buy new construction windows? To save money I'm thinking to buy windows separately and hire carpenter to frame and install. The window companies want just to replace. What's the budget way to do this and get decent windows and quality install? Buy windows at ABC? Big box? I'm even checking Facebook marketplace for builder/remodel surplus. We're in mid Georgia, so very mild winter and hot summers. . Thank you so much in advance for your advice.
New or replacement? Install?
Re: New or replacement? Install?
Just some food for thought. The majority of folks that come to this site regarding complaints about their windows/ installation are 99% the result of a family friend or just a jack of all trades contractor who has the windows supplied by the homeowner in order to save some money. How much money was actually saved though when the homeowner has a hire an actual window company to go out and re do the work? Nothing, it cost them double. By the way, everyone is on a tight budget. Of course you could say we are bias because we are in the window industry but you cannot change facts.
Would you use your same logic with a plumbing issue?

Looking for good surplus windows will lower your cost.
Finding a craftsman to do what you want is doable, getting the quality you need in a cheap budget may become the rub.
Reframing the opening should be no problem, finishing the exterior and making it water tight is the challenge for a rookie. We see things every day that make us shake our heads. This week we found a twin DH that only had 4 screws holding it in, the center head and sill had no attachment.

Re: New or replacement? Install?
Few high end windows are available at box stores and lumber yards
Few high end installers will agree to install windows that you source
You are your own General Contractor in this arrangement (that's how you save some $), but be prepared to deal with finger pointing when future service is needed (although you should know that the vast majority of issues are install related). As Rickenz alluded to, most of these side job guys are nowhere to be found down the road and you end up paying twice.
Best option IMO is to find a reputable, local company that sells a great window. Contrary to popular perception, the vast majority of complaints in this industry (and there are MANY), are from people that took the lower priced, higher risk route as opposed to biting the bullet and paying for quality and peace of mind.
