Replacing Double Entry Door w/ Vinyl Sliding Door

#1 Post by MRWindows »

How can I replace my double entry door with a vinyl gliding patio door?

Is it possible to install a retrofit patio door so I do not have to break my stucco? Or will I have to pull out the old door jambs and install a new constuction patio door?

Totally possible to do this without damaging the stucco.

Just don't hire this guy.

Everything right up to the stucco will be removed. The rest is dependent on sizing of the new unit.

Cant I just leave my old door jambs and remove the threshold and order a retro patio door that will fit between my jambs. Each door panel is exactly 36” x 80”, so 72” total width. I would order a 71.5” x 80-80.5” retrofit hliding door.

That could work.
An Okna catalog sized SGD is 71" x 79 1/2" frame size.
How ya going to remove the threshold? Sawzall it off flush with both vertical legs? That will be fun and bucking.
Cap out of the accessory groove to over top of the existing frame?

Like TWN said, you can. You will need someone that can bend some metal to trim it out, but it could work.

Your going to want to measure your door jambs on the exterior side , not where they close in the inside of the jamb. They are usually stepped and I am guessing you will have about 71”, not a big to remove the frame and fur it out regardless. You may want to use some PVC Trim if you are doing this yourself. I like to drop sliding doors down if possible to minimize the height on the lip of frame/sill but this can create bigger gaps at the top.

He is referring to the step over height of the threshold. Some units it is 1.5". To minimize tripping hazzard place on top of sub floor. That is you plan anyway with the removal of the existing threshold. Add a new sill pan too.
